Ve své oceněné knize Almost Like a Whale (Téměř jako velryba) prohlásil Steve Jones knihou tisíciletí Původ druhů Charlese Darwina. A narážeje na druhé význačné Darwinovo dílo, Původ člověka, zaměřuje ve své nejnovější knize pozornost na přírodou zanedbávaná stvoření – na muže. Zrození ovečky Dolly bez jakéhokoli přičinění samce znovu otevírá prastarou otázku, co přesně je úlohou mužského pohlaví, když tisíce druhů se bez samců stejně dobře obejdou. A jestliže pokaždé při sexu muž produkuje takové množství spermií, že by mohl oplodnit každou ženu v Evropě, proč jsou muži tak početní?

Genetika je nejnovější ze všech věd.
