Dabei sollte seine Reise quer durch Europa eigentlich das gemütlichste Stück auf seiner Weltumsegelung werden. Doch Jones sitzt im grimmigen Winter 85/86 mit seinem Trimaran 'Outward Leg' auf dem Rhein-Main-Donau-Kanal fest. Niemand hat ihm gesagt, dass der noch nicht fertig ist. Ein Rückzug kommt für ihn nicht in Frage, und langsam friert sein Schiff ein. Also muss ein Tieflader her, der die 'Outward Leg' über die A9 zur Donau transportieren soll. Doch die Autobahndirektion sagt 'Nein': Der Trimaran ist für eine Teilsperrung 30 cm zu breit, und die kommt außerdem nur für Wirtschaftsgüter, nicht aber für Sportgeräte in Frage. Er müsse also leider wieder umkehren. Haben die Beamten sich so gedacht. Doch sie haben ihre Rechnung ohne den Unbilden gewohnten Seemann gemacht.

§B§Tristan Jones in rauer See§§S§Für einen Seemann wie Tristan Jones ist es das größte anzunehmende Unglück: Landratten vom britischen Zoll beschlagnahmen seine "Sea Dart", weil er die Einfuhrsteuer nicht bezahlen kann. Damit sitzt er buchstäblich auf dem Trockenen. Um sein Schiff zu befreien, ist er gezwungen, jeden Job anzunehmen, den er kriegen kann. Das bringt ihn auf einen Kurs mitten durch den schwierigsten Ozean der Welt: die menschliche Gesellschaft. Er wird Kesselheizer im Londoner Kaufhaus "Harrod's", verblüfft die Zuschauer von Fernseh-Talkshows mit wilden Geschichten und schippert in New York stundenweise zahlende Gäste auf einem Charterboot im Hafenbecken herum. Er lernt das Leben auf der Straße kennen und beginnt schließlich zu schreiben, um nicht dem Alkohol zu verfallen. Erst als er mit seinem Buch "Die unglaubliche Seereise" einen Welterfolg landet, bekommt er wieder Wasser unter den Kiel. Er gewinnt sein Schiff zurück und beschließt, dass es nur einen Platz gi, bt, an dem die "Sea Dart" nun vor Anker gehen kann: den Ballsaal des Hotels Waldorf-Astoria in New York ... §
