Fenomenologická studie o tradici židovské mystiky a dějinách bádání o ní je zásadním příspěvkem k diskusi o tomto tématu. Na základě důkladné práce s prameny se autorovi otevírá možnost sledovat vývoj kabaly a prolínání jejích proudů od středověku až po 19. století. Dokládá, že řada motivů, které se plně rozvinuly až v rámci kabaly, je přítomno již v rabínské literatuře a představuje svéráznou reakci židovských protorabínských kruhů na gnózi. V dalších kapitolách si všímá i obratu, který znamenalo vypovězení Židů ze Španělska, a role kabaly při formování chasidismu.
Kniha poprvé komplexně zpracovává širokou škálu materiálu, pojednávajícího o vytvoření umělého člověka, golema. Autor zkoumá vztahy mezi jednotlivými texty a jejich historickým a duchovním rámcem. Jeho líčení se soustředí mj. na dříve zanedbávané konkrétní techniky stvoření umělého člověka, jichž ve středověku existovala už celá řada. Obsáhlé pasáže se věnují přehledu koncepcí golema v severoevropské a španělské literatuře středověku, jakož i koncepcí křesťanských a židovských v době renesančního zájmu o člověka. Moše Idel také vyslovuje tezi, že účelem koncepce golema bylo udělení mimořádného statusu židovské elitě, která tak byla obdařena schopností vládnout nadpřirozeným silám, jež vyplývala z hluboké znalosti hebrejského jazyka a jeho magických a mystických hodnot.
This volume addresses the complex topic of the preeminent status of the divine feminine power, to be referred also as Female, within the theosophical structures of many important Kabbalists, Sabbatean believers, and Hasidic masters. This privileged status is part of a much broader vision of the Female as stemming from a very high root within the divine world, then She was emanated and constitutes the tenth, lower divine power, and even in this lower state She is sometime conceived of governing this world and as equal to the divine Male. Finally, She is conceived of as returning to Her original place in special moments, the days of Sabbath, the Jewish Holidays or in the eschatological era. Her special dignity is sometime related to Her being the telos of creation, and as the first entity that emerged in the divine thought, which has been later on generated. In some cases, an uroboric theosophy links the Female Malkhut, directly to the first divine power, Keter. The author points to the possible impact of some of the Kabbalistic discussions on conceptualizations of the feminine in the Renaissance period.

L'epoca medievale fu caratterizzata da una cosí ampia varietà di tradizioni relative al Golem, da far pensare che le specifiche tecniche volte alla creazione di tale creatura si svilupparono assai precocemente. Questo libro costituisce un'ampia ed esaustiva analisi della ricchissima letteratura teologica ebraica relativa alla problematica della creazione del Golem, o dell'uomo artificiale, dalla tarda antichità ai tempi moderni, nonché della fitta rete di rapporti intercorsi fra tali elaborazioni teoriche e i rispettivi contesti storico-culturali. In tal modo, esso consente una miglior comprensione non solo di un fenomeno misterioso e di grande forza suggestiva, ma anche della storia della cultura, della mistica e della magia ebraica medievale. Secondo l'interpretazione dell'autore, infatti, il ruolo del Golem all'interno dell'ebraismo era quello di conferire uno status di eccezionalità all'élite ebraica grazie al possesso di poteri soprannaturali derivanti da una profonda conoscenza della lingua e dei suoi valori magici e mistici.
