Kniha podrobně popisuje plavbu Cookovy lodě Endeavour, která odrazila od anglických břehů v srpnu roku 1767 s cílem objevit novou zemi, Terra Australis. Tento fakt však chtěla britská vláda před jinými státy utajit, proto prezentovala tuto výpravu jako výhradně vědeckou expedici. Cook se plavil přes dnešní Kanárské ostrovy a pak podél východního pobřeží Ameriky k Ohňové zemi. Obeplul obávaný mys Horn a před ním se rozevřel nekonečný Tichý oceán. Plavba pokračovala k Novému Zélandu a pak konečně k východnímu pobřeží dnešní Austrálie. Výsledkem této cesty bylo nejen podrobné zmapování Nového Zélandu a východního pobřeží Austrálie, ale i hojnost velmi cenných astronomických, navigačních, zoologických, botanických a antropologických objevů. Příběh Endeavour, skvěle ilustrovaný mapami, kresbami a lepty lodních kreslířů, je strhujícím popisem výpravy, jejíž vědecký i umělecký přínos nemá obdoby. Forma jakéhosi lodního deníku, obsahující hojné pasáže z autentických zápisků vedených jak Cookem, tak ostatními členy posádky a doprovodné ilustrace vzešlé z ruky lodního malíře Sydneyho Parkinsona, činí z tohoto textu přitažlivý počin.

Literatura faktu - popisující druhou výpravu kapitána Jamese Cooka do Tichomoří, při hledání Jižní pevniny a snaze přiblížit se až k jižnímu pólu. Druhá výprava kapitána Cooka. Přesně 13. července 1772, tedy do roka a do dne od chvíle, kdy se James Cook vrátil do Anglie s tím, že pro britskou korunu získal Austrálii a Nový Zéland, vypravil do Tichomoří další dvě lodi, Resolution a Adventure, aby své objevné putování po jižní polokouli dovedl do konce. Tato tři roky trvající plavba zůstává doposud největší objevnou výpravou, kterou kdy kdo podnikl do jižních vod Indického, Tichého a Atlantského oceánu. Žádná jiná plachetní loď nedokázala proplout tak daleko krami okolo jižního pólu.

Touha člověka po poznání je nekonečná. S každým nově získaným poznatkem či dosaženým objevem nedochází tato touha naplnění, ale naopak roste. Člověk vždy rád čelil výzvám a ukládal si stále nové a těžší úkoly. Čím větší bylo nebezpečí, spojené se splněním daného úkolu, tím lépe. V současné době je touto výzvou hluboký vesmír, kdysi ji byla rozlehlá moře a oceány. Zpočátku se lidé plavili pouze v blízkosti pobřeží a na krátké vzdálenosti, postupně však, jak rostla jejich odvaha i úroveň plavidel, se odvažovali i dále od pobřeží a plavili se, v touze po poznání, do stále větších vzdáleností. Po probádání všech moří a oceánů člověk stále nebyl spokojen a v současnosti obrací svou pozornost do mořských hloubek.

The Fatal Voyage is the story of Cook's final journey when he led his most dangerous and fabled expedition to search for the elusive Pacific entrance to the North West Passage. He set sail from England in July 1776 and along the way discovered the Hawaiian archipelago before mapping and charting the formidable north west coast of America, from Vancouver Island to the frozen northern coastline of Alaska. He sailed through the Bering Straits and although his ships reached the entrance to the North West Passage they were defeated by a sheer wall of ice blocking their way. Cook returned to Hawaii to rest, but a series of misjudgments between his men and the islanders sparked a violent clash in which Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay.
