Ona je krásná, mladá, bohatá, vdaná a neuspokojená. On je krásný, bohatý, úspěšný, svobodný, záletný a manželův nadřízený. Svůj cizoložný vztah prožívají současně jako jedinečnou milostnou vášeň na hranici zbožnění a jako její neustálou estetizovanou inscenaci hraničící s rituálem. Avšak ve chvíli, kdy jsou vlivem okolností – jsme ve třicátých letech 20. století a on je Žid – odkázáni čistě jen na lásku v neředěném stavu, chytí se vzdor intenzitě svého citu do pasti, kterou si svými maximalistickými nároky sami připravili. Román zasazený do Ženevy počátku druhé světové války, vznikal třicet let a bývá považován za „nejkrásnější knihu o lásce“ 20. století. Ovšem spíš než o lásce je to román o nemožnosti ideální lásky, jež se nutně musí časem strávit a vyčerpat, o zničující žárlivosti, o zhoubné ironické inteligenci nahlodávající červem pochybnosti i nejkrásnější chvíle. Zároveň je to i román o židovství, plný úzkosti a strachu pronásledovaného národa, ale i rozkladného, černého, neodolatelného humoru. Jeden z největších milostných románů světové literatury 20. století patří zároveň k úhelným dílům francouzsky psané prózy po druhé světové válce.

Šalomoun, Saltiel, Michael, Matitjáš a Pinhas Solal, přezdívaný Hubomlat, žijí poklidný život v židovské komunitě na ostrově Kefallénii. Ovšem jen do chvíle, kdy přijde tajemný dopis z Ženevy obsahující pozvání a šifru, za níž okamžitě všichni tuší poklad nesmírné ceny. Příběh je ale pouhým pozadím pro to hlavní, o co A. Cohenovi jde: vylíčit portréty fantaskních postaviček kefallénských židů a zejména jejich hlavního předtavitele: užvaněného, prolhaného, vychytralého, ale zároveň své spolubratry milujícího Hubomlata. This book constitutes the proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Compiler Construction, CC 2014, which was held as part of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, ETAPS 2014, which took place in Grenoble, France, in April 2014. In dem Alterswerk wendet sich Cohen, der sich dem Tode nahe sieht, seinem sehr viel jüngeren Ich zu und teilt darin seine Erfahrung mit, die ihn zeitlebens nicht mehr loslassen sollte. Als er an seinem zehnten Geburtstag von einem französischen Straßenhändler als Jude beschimpft wird, bricht für ihn eine Welt zusammen. Was folgt, ist eine Erschütterung, wie sie womöglich nur die Literatur darzustellen vermag. Der Antisemitismus, der ihm in der alltäglichsten Szene entgegenschlägt, ist nicht mehr der alte, christliche Antisemitismus, sondern der radikale Antisemitismus der Dreyfus-Affäre. Dieser Antisemitismus hat – wie Cohen selbst festhält – seinen Fluchtpunkt in den deutschen Vernichtungslagern. Renald Luzier (»Luz«), Zeichner von Mohammed-Karikaturen bei »Charlie Hebdo« und Überlebender des Terroranschlags auf die Redaktion 2015, nahm Cohens Buch zur Vorlage für seine gleichnamige Graphic Novel, in der er sich mit den Anschlägen auseinandersetzt: »Ich halte Cohens Buch für eines der wichtigsten politischen Werke des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts.«
