Robert O. Paxton je emeritní profesor společenských věd na Columbijské univerzitě v New Yorku. Vystudoval historii v Oxfordu a na Harvardu. Od roku 1960 ve francouzských archivech intenzivně zpracovával dokumenty týkající se vichystické Francie a z tohoto bádání vyšla mj. přelomová studie Vichy France : Old Guard and New Order, 1940 - 1944 (1972).
