Kniha se zakládá na denících, které si Livingstone psal během dlouhého pobytu v jižní Africe. Je to velmi bezprostřední text, v němž cestovatel, misionář a bojovník proti obchodu s otroky líčí nejen své cesty, ale i lidi, s nimiž se setkal, zvyky místních kmenů a jejich reakce na jeho misionářské úsilí. Věnuje se také rostlinám, zvykům různých zvířat, chorobám, na něž narazil, a dokonce i geologii míst, která navštívil. Jeho snahou je představit jižní Afriku možným kolonistům, kteří by ji „civilizovali“. Sám stojí v pozadí: jen čas od času se zmíní o záchvatech horečky, které ho vysilovaly, nebo o problémech s poštou. Přesto z textu vyvstává pozoruhodný, odvážný a sympatický muž, který svůj život zasvětil nesmírně náročné misi.
