V anglosaské literární tradici není mnoho knih, které by tematicky souvisely s Československem. Chabonův příběh se začíná odvíjet v New Yorku na podzim 1939; hlavní roli v něm hrají Samuel Klayman (později se přejmenuje na Claye), židovský chlapec z Brooklynu, a Josef Kavalier, který uprchl z Prahy před Hitlerem. Jeden má rád komiksy a brakovou literaturu, druhý zbožňuje Harry Houdiniho. Utvoří tým, v němž Sammy píše texty a Josef kreslí, vytvoří komiksového hrdinu a uspějí v jednom nakladatelství. Jde o mimořádně silný, citlivý příběh a zároveň o určitou mystifikaci - autor vytváří představu, že jeho hrdinové skutečně existovali. Za tuto knihu získal autor v roce 2001 Pulitzerovu cenu.

Profesor tvůrčího psaní Grady Tripp vláčí na hřbetě nejen krizi středního věku a následky svého uměřeně prostopášného života, ale také břemeno nedopsaného a podle všeho nedopsatelného románu Zázrační hoši. Dva a půl tisíce stran bobtnajícího opus magnum jako by se svému autorovi smálo do obličeje, a přitom nebylo než výčtem jeho selhání, marných nadějí a promarněných příležitostí. A Grady, místo aby psal, balí jointy a před studenty se tváří jako druhý Henry Miller. Jedním z těch, jež aura jeho talentu na chvíli oslní, je i James Leer, rozháraný mladík jako vystřižený z atlasu aspirantů tvůrčího psaní. Nečekané setkání těch dvou na večírku plném spisovatelů odstartuje běh událostí místy tak absurdních, že hraničí s groteskou, jen místo dortů a neohrabaných policajtů se tu o zábavu starají transvestita, mrtvý pes a sako po Marilyn Monroe.

Michael Chabon pojmenoval svůj nový román podle nesmrtelné swingové skladby, kterou hrály a hrají mnohé proslulé bigbandy. Na druhou stranu, kniha je uvedena citátem Wernhera von Brauna, německého konstruktéra superzbraní V-2, který přešel na americkou stranu a posléze se stal duchovním otcem amerického vesmírného programu. Podobně jako von Braun je i protagonista románu pravým člověkem moderního věku, mužem neuvěřitelného osudu a mnoha tváří. Chabonův vypravěč jej nazývá prostě „můj dědeček“ a tato postava se skutečně zakládá na autorových vzpomínkách na umírajícího prarodiče. Román, který dokázal obsáhnout celé století v jediném životě a celý život v jediném týdnu, se čte jedním dechem.

Román se odehrává v alternativní přítomnosti v aljašském městě Sitka: tam byla před 2. světovou válkou umístěna velká část východoevropských Židů. Sitka je federální distrikt USA se zvláštním režimem židovské samosprávy, jež má však záhy skončit, a území se vrátí do rukou Spojených států. To v obyvatelích města, které už tři generace žije vlastním životem, svázaným specifickými náboženskými pravidly, vyvolává pochopitelnou nejistotu. Životem omlácený detektiv oddělení vražd Meyer Landsman začíná vyšetřování nového případu, který může být jeho poslední. Pátrání po vrahovi mladého narkomana zavede Landsmana a jeho parťáka Berka Shemetse hluboko do nitra místní ortodoxní komunity. Chabon vytváří fascinující, do nejmenších podrobností promyšlený svět, v němž dochází ke konfliktu prastarých hodnot s požadavky moderní společnosti, sevřené zvláštními regulemi výjimečného režimu. Vzdává tak hold svým oblíbeným „pokleslým“ žánrům, ať už je to komiks či detektivka.

Chabonův hrdina Art Bechstein hledá svou lidskou i sexuální identitu a skrze hořké sebepoznání nachází lásku a dospělost. Chabonův jazyk je prostoupen nostalgií; navíc se vyznačuje nesmírnou rafinovaností, jedinečným citem pro metaforu a jemným smyslem pro humor.

Oceňovaný americký autor (nar. 1963) s evropskými kořeny je u nás zatím znám jen díky románu Úžasná dobrodružství Cavaliera a Claye. Chabon se stihl ovšem proslavit už dříve, zaujala už jeho prvotina The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, podle jeho druhého románu Wonder Boys byl v roce 2000 natočen film s Michaelem Douglasem v hlavní roli. Živě se zajímá o komiks, hudbu a popkulturu vůbec, na jeho webových se mj. dočteme, že „podíl Monty Pythonova létajícího cirkusu na utváření osobní estetiky byl primární“. Modelový svět je soubor povídek z přelomu 80. a 90. let. Autor sice tvrdí, že mu více vyhovuje větší prostor románu, jeho povídky nicméně dokazují, že mu malá plocha umožňuje dokonale zkoncentrovat autorské kvality, díky nimž si získal kritiky i čtenáře.

Nový román nositele Pulitzerovy ceny před námi otevírá hudební a filmovou scénu 70. let v USA. Dostáváme se do doby, kdy stále ještě frčí malé obchůdky s gramofonovými deskami, ale jejich místo brzy převezmou velké prodejní řetězce. Dílo je také příběhem o lásce partnerské i rodičovské – příběhem o tom, jak snadno otcové opouštějí své syny a jak těžce k nim hledají cestu zpět.

Michael Chabon na sebe bere nesnadný úkol: v novele Konečné řešení oživuje velkého detektiva z Baker Street, k jehož nezaměnitelným atributům patří dýmka a housle, a otevírá případ vraždy a krádeže afrického papouška. Hrdinou příběhu je devítiletý chlapec Linus Steinman, který přijíždí do válečné Anglie jako židovský uprchlík. Chlapec, který nemluví, má afrického papouška Žako chrlícího řady záhadných čísel. Že by kód jednotek SS? Šifry německých ponorek? Záhada se mění v problém ve chvíli, kdy je spáchána vražda a papoušek zmizí. Na scéně se objevuje starý pán, bývalý fenomenální detektiv – ačkoli jméno Sherlocka Holmese nikdy nepadne, je jasné, že jde o něj. „Stařec“ se ujímá případu. Na malém prostoru autor dokazuje, že je mistrem vyprávění, ale i experimentátorem, jednu kapitolu např. vypráví papoušek. Jde o „lehčí“ žánr detektivky, zároveň o vynikající literární počin – svým posledním dílem složil Chabon poklonu nejslavnějšímu detektivovi všech dob i jeho tvůrci.
