V základním díle literární teorie 20. století autoři definují základní pojmy a vztahy literatury k ostatním společenským disciplinám. TEORIE LITERATURY R. Wellka a A. Warrena je základním dílem literární vědy. Kniha, která vyšla poprvé v roce 1949 a dočkala se mnoha vydání, zaujala především jako srozumitelný výklad podstatných literárních problémů. Autoři se shodli v názoru, že studium literatury se má zabývat problémy specificky literárními a má slučovat vědecké zkoumání s kritickým soudem. V první části se kniha zabývá definováním pojmů a filozofickým pojetím existence literárního díla, vztahy literatury k biografii, psychologii, společnosti, ideám a neliterárním uměleckým druhům. Konečně ústředním tématem je vnitřní přístup ke zkoumání literatury, interpretace a analýza samotných literárních děl, obšírné pojednání o eufonii, rytmu, metru, stylu, žánrech, metafoře, symbolu. Zvláštní kapitola je věnována hodnocení a možnostem literární historie. Teorie literatury byla přeložena do čtyřiadvaceti jazyků. Čeština je v pořadí jazykem pětadvacátým.
