Publikace je výběrem studií ze dvou knih amerického literárního vědce Reného Welleka (Concepts of Critism, 1963; Discriminations: Further Concepts of Critism, 1971). Autor se v nich pokouší o syntetizující pohledy na problematiku pojetí literární historie, teorie a kritiky, přičemž mu jde především o projasňování širokého spektra výrazně odlišných metodologií a pojmů ustavujících se v evropské i zámořské historii těchto disciplín. René Wellek přitom těží jak ze své hluboké znalosti evropského strukturalismu a komparatistiky, tak z pochopení amerických literárněvědných tradic spojených především s "novou kritikou".
