Turlough is narrated largely by the legendary blind Irish harper from his death bed, and through the recollections of those closest to him. It powerfully evokes a lost Ireland of famine and disease, eviction and oppression. During their four year incarceration in a Lebanese cell the authors envisaged walking in the High Andes and across Patagonia. Five years after their release Keenan and McCarthy travelled to Chile to fulfil this dream. The story of their journey revisited the past experiences whilst allowing them to live by their own rules.

Ve své knize víceméně pomíjí vlastní příběh plný násilí a nenávisti a soustředí se na vnitřní svět člověka vystaveného extrémnímu tlaku. Roky prožité tváří v tvář každodennímu ponížení hodnotí jako životní zkušenost, která v něm probudila netušené schopnosti a pocity. Fyzická bolest se mu jeví jako mnohem méně významná ve srovnání se strádáním duše, proti kterému lze bojovat jen nezlomnou vůlí a humorem. Zajímavý je příběh jeho pevného přátelství se spoluvězněm, člověkem s odlišnými životními východisky, s nímž by se za normálních okolností těžko sblížil.
