Příběh starce Tuahira, chlapce Muindingy a mladíka Kindzua jako by se zrodil z historií vyprávěných starci kmene, shromážděných pod mohutným stromem uprostřed mozambické sanzaly. Je to příběh dnešního Mosambiku, znetvořeného roky občanské války. Náměsíčná země je románem plným takových neskutečných upřímných příběhů. Jsou v ní šamani i africká savana. Jsou v ní mrtví, kteří se vracejí, aby radili živýma živí, kteří jsou nuceni žít mezi mrtvými (nebo mezi mrtvolami, což zdaleka není totéž). Jsou v ní sny jejichž prostřednictvím přichází k člověku minulost i budoucnost.
