Ve vesnici se mezitím objeví Američané, kteří se připravují na vylodění v Normandii, v okolních lesích se ukrývá dezertér, a příchod tajemného Včelího krále vyvolá mezi obyvateli pozdvižení. Žije ve světě, v němž platí zvláštní zákony, má své vlastní rituály a vesničané se bojí, že začne mít nad chlapci stejnou moc jako nad svými včelami.

A newly-widowed woman has done a runner. She just jumped in her car, abandoned her (very nice) house in north London and kept on driving until she reached the Norfolk coast.
