Ausgangspunkt sind 75 kostbare Originalgipse aus dem Nachlass des Künstlers, die 2006 als Schenkung von Bruno und Odette Giacometti an die Alberto Giacometti-Stiftung im Kunsthaus Zürich gelangten, wissenschaftlich untersucht und sorgfältig restauriert wurden. Gips als Arbeitsmaterial hatte für Giacometti grosse Bedeutung: Er erlaubte ihm, seine Objekte auf vielfältige Weise zu bemalen oder zu bearbeiten. Nicht wenige seiner Skulpturen existieren nur in einer Gipsversion. Anhand zahlreicher Meisterwerke aus allen Schaffensphasen stellt die neue Monografie den künstlerischen Umgang Giacomettis mit der Materialität seiner Werkstoffe in den Mittelpunkt und macht den schöpferischen Prozess eines Jahrhundertkünstlers erfahrbar. Die kostbaren und fragilen Gipse stehen dabei im Fokus. Einbezogen werden aber auch zahlreiche Skulpturen in anderen Materialien wie Plastilin, Stein, Ton, Holz und Bronze.

Alberto Giacometti (1901−1966) and Francis Bacon (1909−1992) are two artists whose bodies of work influenced twentieth-century art and continue to resonate to this day. What turned them into icons in their field has to do with their individual lifestyles, as well as with the historical, social, and aesthetic upheavals in Europe after 1945, which each artist reflected upon in his ouevre. The Fondation Beyeler has ambitiously undertaken a juxtaposition of the two artists in a large, upcoming exhibition in 2018. In a fascinating way, the meeting of the two artists’ work here is like a dialogue about space and time, in which it is possible to recognize each man’s art in the work of the other. Questa raccolta, redatta in gran parte in italiano, offre uno sguardo diretto sulla sua avventura artistica, dagli anni del collegio agli incontri con le avanguardie e le mostre internazionali.

Eine aus knapp hundert Zeichnungen und Aquarellen bestehende Werkgruppe Alberto Giacomettis ist 2012, nach dem Tod des Bruders Bruno, als Legat ins Kunsthaus Zürich gekommen. Dieses Zeichnungskonvolut repräsentiert Alberto Giacomettis ganzes Schaffen, von den frühen Jahren in Stampa bis in die Pariser Zeit. Darunter befinden sich Kopien nach Werken Dürers, Mantegnas, Holbeins und Hodlers, die Giacometti bereits zwischen dem 12. und 15. Lebensjahr anfertigte. In den 1920er-Jahren folgten Studien nach romanischen und ägyptischen Plastiken, in den 1930er-Jahren setzte sich Giacometti mit Matisse, Cézanne und Rodin auseinander, wobei sehr eigenwillige Umsetzungen entstanden. Das Buch enthält ausserdem bedeutende Bildnisse von Familienangehörigen und diverse Selbstporträts des Künstlers. Darstellungen von Landschaften bei Stampa und Maloja sowie Atelieransichten und meisterhafte Figurenstudien aus den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren runden die Auswahl ab.
