Když vyšel poprvé v roce 1951 Den trifidů od Johna Wyndhama, měl autor knihy za sebou už řadu románů a povídek. S nimi však literárně příliš neuspěl. I Den trifidů vycházel původně jen časopisecky na pokračování. Velký zájem čtenářů si však vynutil rychle za sebou hned několikeré knižní vydání a způsobil, že se Wyndham věnoval pak již nastálo vědeckofantastickému žánru. Román o tom, jak neznámý roj meteoritů způsobí u většiny pozemšťanů slepotu a jak toho využijí průmyslové rostliny „trifidi“, které náhle vyvinou zcela nečekané vlastnosti a zaútočí na lidi, má v sobě dostatek prvků neobvyklosti, aby čtenáře přitahoval. Zároveň mu však nechybí onen wellsovský obecný pohled na život a jeho reálné jádro, které z fantastického příběhu činí podobenství o skutečném ohrožení přírody člověkem a člověka přírodou. Anglický autor John Wyndham (1903–1969) patří k nejvýznamnějším tvůrcům žánru science fiction. Proslavil se především díky románu Den trifidů. Nemenší úspěchy Wyndham slavil i se svými dalšími invazními a katastrofickými romány Kukly či Midwichské kukačky. Ke klasice žánru patří rovněž jeho povídky, které vycházejí v uceleném sborníku u nás poprvé. „Teze o dokonalosti člověka je vrcholem domýšlivosti: konečná podoba je svatokrádež.“ Před mnoha lety Zemi postihlo apokalyptické Utrpení. Ostrov Labrador zůstal jedním z mála obyvatelných míst a lidé z vesnice Waknuk, kteří Utrpení považují za boží trest, se od té doby snaží důsledným dodržováním božích zákonů a přikázání další podobné pohromě předejít. Kukly s naléhavou aktuálností ukazují nebezpečí fanaticky pojímaného náboženství – například zřetelným odkazem ke středověkému upalování čarodějnic – a relativitu toho, co znamená „být normální“. V obecné rovině Wyndham jako zastánce Darwinovy evoluční teorie zobrazuje snahu zaostalejšího druhu zajistit si přežití tím, že odstraňuje jakékoli zárodky druhu nového.

Op een mooie septemberdag landen daar bewoners van een andere planeet. Zij brengen de bevolking van het dorp in een diepe slaap en vertrekken daarna weer. Dat zou op zichzelf nog niet zo erg hoeven te zijn, maar na enige weken wordt ontdekt dat alle vrouwen in het dorp zwanger zijn. Gelukkig weet men een algemene hysterie te voorkomen, en het voorval wordt voor de omgeving geheim gehouden. Wanneer de baby's worden geboren, blijken deze al spoedig over superieure geestesgaven te beschikken. Het wordt nu duidelijk wat de bedoeling is: als deze kinderen volwassen zijn, zullen zij het hele mensdom gaan overheersen. Het zal een nietsontziende strijd worden om de suprematie. Ook in Rusland is iets dergelijks gebeurd, maar de Russen hebben het hele dorp en zijn bewoners eenovudig met een atoombom uitgeroeid. Natuurlijk gaan ook in Engeland stemmen op om de indringers te liquideren, maar per slot van rekening is men er daar te fatsoenlijk voor. Niemand weet een oplopssing, totdat een leraar het probleem op eigen initiatief uit de wereld helpt.
