Stanley Bernard Ellin se narodil v Brooklynu, New York. Vystudoval univerzitu v Brooklynu. Pracoval jako dělník v ocelárnách, mlékarně a jako učitel. V letech 1944–45 sloužil v americké armádě a zúčastnil se závěrečných bojů II. světové války. Na naléhání manželky se po válce začal věnovat literatuře jako spisovatel detektivních románů a povídek. Byl zvolen prezidentem MWA, obdržel ceny Grandmaster MWA 1980. Edgar 1954, 1955, 1959. Zemřel na infarkt.
