Pozoruhodná osobnost filologa, spisovatele a filozofa Clivea Staplese Lewise (1898-1963) je dnes známá především díky jeho sedmi knihám pro děti, které se staly předmětem čtenářského kultu i seriózního badatelského zájmu. Lewis byl spolu s J.R.R. Tolkiena jednou z vůdčích osobností kroužku The Inklings, jenž se scházel ve 30. a 40. letech. Scenárista William Nicholson z tohoto výlučného duchovního prostředí vyzdvihuje Lewise jako protagonistu neobvyklého milostného vztahu k americké básnířce Joy Greshamové. Nicholson napsal původní verzi příběhu jako televizní hru pro BBC, později ji přepracoval na úspěšnou divadelní hru a scénář pro film Richarda Attenborougha. Hlavními aktéry romance jsou skutečné osobnosti; Lewisův odklon od staromládeneckých postojů ho vzdálil přátelům a jeho názorová proměna po manželčině smrti je doložena v jeho posledních literárních dílech. Lewis se také ujal výchovy nevlastního syna Douglase. I když jeho kolegové z univerzity ve filmu vystupují pod jinými jmény, tvůrci se soustředili na příběh nevšední lásky, která změnila životní postoje plachého oxfordského profesora. Snímek zachycuje vztah Lewise a Greshamové jako přibližování dvou odlišných osobností, které si dokázaly porozumět a nalézt naději i tváří v tvář Joyině smrtelné chorobě.
