Magazín Fantasy & Science Fiction, který vychází v USA již téměř šedesát let, se stal nejlepším zdrojem fantastických povídek na světě. Česká edice, ve spolupráci s americkou redakcí, nabízí jak klasické příběhy, tak díla současných autorů. Každé čtvrtletí se můžete těšit na pestré světy spisovatelské fantazie. Mezi novinkami najdete povídku Předplatné New York Times od Stephena Kinga, která vychází téměř současně s jejím světovým uvedením. Stephen Baxter přináší oceněnou science fiction, která nás zavede do postkatastrofické budoucnosti. Lucius Shepard odhaluje v jedné z nejlépe hodnocených novel, co znamená vidět hvězdy skrze kámen. Tento magazín je splněným snem pro všechny milovníky kvalitních příběhů.

První kniha Enderovské série. Vědeckofantastický román, který můžeme doporučit všem milovníkům dobré literatury. Román nejen o zápasu pozemské civilizace se smrtelným nebezpečím z kosmu, ale také o přátelství, bratrské lásce a nenávisti. Kniha je napsána strhujícím způsobem a patří k tomu nejlepšímu, co současná americká sci-fi produkce nabízí. Kniha oceněna cenou Nebula 1985 a Hugo 1986.

Román paralelní s Enderovou hrou. Otevírá tzv. Stínovou sérii Enderova světa. Román Enderův stín se opět odehrává na obrovské orbitální stanici, na níž Mezinárodní flotila vychovává z nejnadanějších dětí své budoucí velitele. Země žije pod hrozbou útoku termiťanů a ve slumech Rotterdamu živoří v partě nechtěných „spratků“ maličké dítě s geniální schopností přežít – Bean – Fazolek. Svou chytrostí změní poměry všech malých dětí v celém městě a proto není nijak překvapivé, že si jej všimnou vyhledavači Flotily. Za pár měsíců jej raketoplán odnáší na oběžnou dráhu... Od prvních chvil naráží na jméno Endera Wiggina a je jen otázkou času, kdy se tyto podivuhodné individuality setkají... Podle mínění kritiků se Card vrátil k tomu nejlepšímu, čím se proslavil v Enderově hře, tj. skvělé zápletce a napínavému ději. Vy, kdo jste si oblíbili Enderovu hru, budete jistě nadšeni i Endorovým stínem, protože sice budete číst příběh, který znáte, ale z pohledu Fazolka, a zjistíte, že je vlastně... Kdo? První část „Lusitánské trilogie”, druhá kniha Enderovské série. Enderovo vítězství ve válce s termiťany otevřelo lidské rase víc než sedmdesát planet. Pod vedením Hvězdného kongresu lidstvo osídlilo Stovku světů. Ender celý život nesl tíhu viny, že vyvraždil celou civilizaci, a stal se prvním Mluvčím za mrtvé. Uběhly tři tisíce let. Kdokoli může kdykoli zavolat Mluvčího. A jeho úkolem je vysvětlit a obhájit mrtvé i živé. Za čí smrt bude Mluvčí hovořit na planetě Lusitania? Unese lidstvo tíhu kontaktu s nehumanoidní inteligentní rasou?

Povídky z Enderova světa („Enderverse”). Enderův cyklus patří k nejpopulárnějším ságám žánru SF. Jednotlivé tituly získaly ceny Hugo a Nebula a vycházejí v mnoha jazycích. Můžete v nich sledovat příběh chlapce Endera Wiggina od jeho vítězství nad cizí rasou, která hodlala zničitZemi, až po jeho putování po kolonizovaných světech hluboko ve vesmíru. Ale fanoušky na celém světě zajímalo, co se dělo okolo. A tak jako první spatřila světlo světa povídka Investiční porada, která přibližuje první setkání Endera a jeho virtuální přítelkyně Jane. A když v roce 2002 chtělo jedno malonákladové nakladatelství v USA vydat tuto povídku s původní povídkou Enderova hra, uvolil se Orson Scott Card napsat další povídku z Enderova světa, která se jmenovala Polský chlapec. Po obrovském úspěchu této sbírky, která byla okamžitě vyprodána, se rozhodlo velké standardní nakladatelství, že to také zkusí, ale protože rozsah díla byl malý, připsal O. S. Card ještě jednu povídku Obtížný student. Pro českého čtenáře je kniha doplněna o podrobnou autorovu bibliografii, kterou sestavil Martin Šust.

Druhý díl sedmisvazkové ságy o Alvinovi Tvůrci nás opět zavádí do Ameriky minulého století. Ale je to jiný kontinent, než jaký jej známe my. Ve světě, který nám tak elegantně a s takovou invencí předkládá O. S. Card, šly dějiny poněkud jinudy. A co je nejdůležitější: v životě lidí mají své nezastupitelné místo „talenty“. Magické schopnosti, zaměřené k některým činnostem. Když mu bylo jedenáct let, viděl, jak bílí lidé vraždí jeho otce. Od toho dne se Indián Lola-šika stal žalostným opilcem. Jeho bratr, Te-kumsa, by chtěl bělochy z kontinentu vyhnat. Ale guvernér Bill Harrison osnuje proti Indiánům mnohem krutější plány. Když je začne uskutečňovat, mimoděk to vede k setkání Alvina juniora – výjimečného bílého chlapce se silnou magickou mocí – s Lola-šikou a Te-kumsou. A tak začíná další etapa Alvinovy výuky.

Mapy v zrcadle, svazek 1. Hrobka písní nabízí jedenáct originálních příběhů z bohaté představivosti O. S. Carda založených na neobvyklých nápadech. Dají se zařadit od SF přes horor až k psychologické povídce. Je to temná strana Enderovy hry či Enderova stínu. O. S. Card jak ho rozhodně neznáte, ale stále spisovatel s neuvěřitelnou invencí a bohatou fantazií.

Pokračování románu „Stínové loutky” (čtvrtá kniha „Stínové série”). Fazolkův život byl dosud jen hrou o přežití. Už v pouličním gangu se musel spolehnout na geniální taktiku, protože využití síly nepřicházelo v úvahu. A pak se stal rekrutem Bitevní školy, stal se jedním ze zachránců lidstva v zoufalém preventivním úderu proti mimozemskému nepříteli. Z nejmenšího vojáka školy se proměnil v pravou ruku legendárního Endera a jak jsme poznali, bez Fazolka by ani Ender nejspíš neuspěl. Poté, co byl nepřítel poražen sloužil Fazolek jako velitel ozbrojených složek Hegemona. Ale nyní si hledá domov pro svou manželku Petru a vytouženou rodinu. Jenže na Zemi není místa, kde by byli v bezpečí před početnými nepřáteli. A tak se musejí znovu vydat po Enderových stopách vstříc ke hvězdám a vytouženému klidu. Román Obrův stín je čtvrtým, prozatím posledním přeloženým svazkem „Stínové série”.

Volné pokračování románů Enderova hra a Enderův stín z pera amerického klasika sci-fi žánru. Zdá se, že lidstvo je zachráněno a Enderova pravá ruka, přítel a pomocník Fazolek, se vrací na Zemi. Děti z Enderovy Bojové školy jsou opět se svými rodinami, ale stává se z nich potencionální nebezpečí. Všichni jsou postupně uneseni, jen Fazolek je zachráněn a hledá pomoc u Enderova staršího bratra Petra. Nová dobrodružství začínají.

Vykoupení Kryštofa Kolumba sice není nejznámějším Cardovým dílem, ale mnozí ho pokládají za jeho nejvyzrálejší a možná i nejlepší román. Každý ví, jak zničující účinek mělo objevení Ameriky na tamní domorodé obyvatelstvo. Představte si tedy, že vědci z budoucnosti tuto tragédii pečlivě prostudovali a rozhodli se tok dějin změnit. Nejdříve je však nutné zjistit, co vlastně pohánělo Kolumba tak silně v jeho objevitelské snaze... A to je úkol pro dvojici pozorovatelů, manželský pár a později i pro jejich dceru. Kolumbus se v jejich očích proměňuje z dobře známé historické postavy v charismatického vůdce, hluboce věřícího člověka a muže mnoha předností i slabostí, které korespondují s dobovým chápáním světa. Zcela samostatný román Vykoupení Kryštofa Kolumba patří díky pečlivě a věrohodně vystavěným charakterům k vrcholným dílům science fiction s motivem cest v čase.

Pokračování románu „Hegemonův stín” (třetí kniha „Stínové série”) sleduje osudy Fazolka, Enderovy pravé ruky, po vítězství nad termiťany. Enderův cyklus, známý a ceněný v žánru SF, zachycuje příběh chlapce Endera Wiggina a jeho vývoj od vítězství nad cizí rasou až po problémy na kolonizovaných světech. Po skončení války se geniální děti vracejí na Zemi, která se stává novým bitevním polem, neboť státy chtějí využít jejich válečnický potenciál. Ve třetím díle se Fazolek snaží podpořit svého bratra Petra, který se stal Hegemonem, ale jeho autorita není brána vážně novou Čínskou říší a dalšími zeměmi. Konflikt mezi Petrem a Achillem nutí Fazolka opět se skrývat. Nachází útočiště u starého přítele Alaje, který se dostal na významný post. S jeho pomocí se „děti” z Bitevní školy snaží nastolit ve světě rovnováhu a připravit Zemi na definitivní řešení. Tato kniha tak pokračuje v napínavém vyprávění o mocenských hrách a strategických intrikách v kontextu po válce.

„Přímé pokračování Enderovy hry” Chronologicky 2. kniha série Ender. Enderův cyklus patří k nejpopulárnějším ságám žánru SF. Jednotlivé tituly získaly ceny Hugo a Nebula a vycházejí už dlouhá léta v mnoha jazycích. Určitě si stejně jako mnozí kladete otázku, co se s Enderem dělo po skončení války s termiťany a před tím, než doletěl na Lusitanii. Nyní máte jedinečnou možnost se to dozvědět – přichází Cardovo nové dílo, pokračování Enderovy hry: Ender ve vyhnanství. Zpočátku Ender věří, že by se mohl vrátit na Zemi tak rychle, jak to bude možné. Ale už skoro rok je situace klidná, a Ender přesto zůstává na Erótu. A navíc je přijat plán, jak ho na Zemi vůbec neposlat, protože je užitečnější jako jméno a příběh, než by mohl být jako nevhodná osoba z masa a krve. Na konci Enderovy hry Andrew Wiggin – známější spíše jako Ender – zjistí, že nemůže žít na Zemi. Stal se více než jen chlapcem, který vyhrál hru: je zachránce Země, hrdina, vojenský génius, o jehož loajalitu a služby by se rád ucházel každý národ. Má na vybranou – buď žít pod Hegemonovou kontrolou jako figurka v bratrových politických hrách, nebo se může připojit k posádce kolonizační lodi a odletět, aby se usadil na jednom z mnoha nových světů, získaných ve válce.

Ansset byl v dětství unesen a vychován v odosobněném, mystickém místě nazývaném Dům písní. Skutečnými přáteli tak pro něj byly právě jen jeho písně a díky tomu se chlapcovo pěvecké nadání rozvinulo v neobvyklé míře. Síla takového hlasu však může být nejen požehnáním, ale i prokletím. Mladý Pěvec totiž dokáže vycítit pocity posluchačů a zesílit je tak, aby jejich prostřednictvím uzdravoval nebo ničil. Právo Lanika Muellera jako dědice nejmocnějšího vladařského rodu na planetě Zrada nemá být nikdy naplněno. Je totiž „radikál“, radikální regenerát. Zrůda mezi lidmi, kteří si dovedou regenerovat zraněné tkáně a prodávat nadbytečné části těla despotickým vesmířanům za železo. Na planetě bez tvrdých kovů a bez možnosti úniku totiž železo znamená moc v závodě, kdo dřív postaví kosmickou loď. Železo je příslib svobody, který, jak Lanik zjišťuje při odhalování zrádného, nepředstavitelného spiknutí, se možná nikdy nenaplní. V úloze dobyvatele a ve vyhnanství Lanik spřádá odvážný a nebezpečný plán: plán, který může konečně přetrhnout řetěz soupeření a prolévání krve, který obyvatele Zrady zotročuje tak, jak by to vesmířané nikdy nedokázali.

Znovu jsou tady – autoři a jejich světy, jež si získávají miliony dychtivých čtenářů. Opět přicházejí ve dvou svazcích a vracejí se do zvláštních a podmanivých míst, do nichž je zasazen nový příběh, jenž doplňuje a dokresluje jejich nejslavnější díla. Mnoho příběhů se odvíjí v dřívější minulosti těchto scifi světů a vrhá nové světlo na příběhy již proslavené. Jiné sledují známé dějové linie, ale odehrávají se stranou hlavních událostí. Všechny do jednoho jsou však nepostradatelné pro miliony fanoušků těchto autorů a jejich světů, které již hluboce uvízly v myslích a srdcích čtenářů. Joe Haldeman v povídce Rozdělená válka dokresluje příběhy z knihy Věčná válka. Všemi oblíbený Enderův cyklus doplňuje Orson Scott Card v povídce Investiční poradce o tu část, v níž se dozvíme, kterak Ender k Jane přišel. David Brin v příběhu Pokušení vysvětluje, jak se mladá rasa, v tomto případě delfíni, vyrovnává s nabídkou, kterou nelze na první pohled odmítnout… Nancy Kressová nás uvádí do své slavné ságy o Nespavých povídkou Spící psi. Greg Bear, autor nesmrtelných románů o světě Cesty a asteroidu Thistledownu, znovu vyvolává Olmyho na Cestu všech duchů.

V okamžiku, kdy desetiletý Ivan narazí v hustém lese Karpat na tajemnou mýtinu, se jeho život navždy změní. První díl ságy o Alvinovi Tvůrci nás zavádí do Ameriky minulého století. Orson Scott Card nám elegantně, citlivě a s velkou invencí předkládá vlastní verzi kolonizace Ameriky. Vypráví o mužích a ženách, kteří s pomocí kouzel a magie osidlují nový kontinent. V tomto světě mají magické schopnosti svoje nezastupitelné místo, ale v Anglii, za vlády lordů protektorů, jsou nežádoucí, a proto je spousta lidí donucena opustit rodnou zemi a plout za oceán, do Nového světa. Jedním z potomků těchto odvážných kolonizátorů je i Alvin Mlynář, sedmý syn sedmého syna, což je podle tradice dítě obdařené mimořádnými schopnostmi; je ovšem také mimořádně ohrožené. Nové vydání Sedmého syna navíc obsahuje zajímavý doslov z pera známého polského spisovatele Andrzeje Sapkowského, který má Alvina Tvůrce ve velké oblibě a řadí ho mezi nejlepší fantasy, které kdy byly napsány.

Třetí díl sedmisvazkové ságy o Alvinovi Tvůrci nás opět zavádí do Ameriky devatenáctého století. Není to ale kontinent, jak jej známe my, někteří jeho obyvatelé využívají jako svá přirozená nadání schopnosti, které bychom označili za magické. Aby dostál otcovu slibu, vydává se Alvin ve svých jedenácti letech do městečka Vidlice, kde se za dramatických okolností narodil a kde se má nyní vyučit na kováře. Doufá, že kromě ovládnutí práce se železem se od místní světlice, jež kdysi předpověděla jeho osud, dozví, jak má naložit s talentem Tvůrce, jaký prý po světě nechodil tisíce let. Ve stejném okamžiku se na otrokářském Jihu začíná odvíjet příběh mladé černošky, která hodlá svému právě narozenému synovi zajistit za jakoukoli cenu vytouženou svobodu. Příběhy všech se splétají místy dílem náhody, místy přičiněním toho, kdo se mladého Alvina už nesčetněkrát pokusil zabít, temného Ničitele. Přesto jsou to nakonec lidé, kdo Alvina donutí, aby učinil nejtěžší rozhodnutí a obrátil své umění proti životu. Stejně jako za oba předchozí díly série získal Orson Scott Card za Učedníka Alvina cenu Locus pro nejlepší fantasy roku.

Danny North od útlého dětství věděl, že se jeho rodina liší od těch ostatních, a že se on sám liší od svých příbuzných. Zatímco se jeho bratranci a sestřenice učili vytvářet věci, které obyčejní lidé nazývají vílami, duchy, golemy, trolly, vlkodlaky, a činí další divy, jež jsou jejich rodinným dědictvím, Danny měl strach, že nikdy žádné podobné nadání neprokáže a bude mezi svými nejbližšími ztracený. Vyrostl v rozlehlém a nesourodém domě, v odloučení hor západní Virginie, daleko od měst, daleko od škol, daleko od jiných lidí, obklopen desítkami tet a strýců, bratranců a sestřenic, jimž vládl jeho otec. Dům halí řada tajemství a platí v něm řada pravidel, která musí Danny bezpodmínečně dodržovat. Je v něm i tajná knihovna, již tvoří jen několik desítek svazků, ale žádný z nich není v angličtině - od Dannyho a jeho mladých příbuzných se však očekává, že si jazyk knih plynně osvojí. A třebaže jeho nejbližší mohou svobodně kouzlit, kdykoliv se jim zachce, nikdy je při tom nesmí vidět lidé zvenčí. K některým tajemstvím však nemá přístup ani Danny, a ta nakonec vyústí v pohromu pro celou rodinu.

Třetí kniha Enderovské série. Ender a Valentina Wigginovi: bratr a sestra, jejichž životy formovaly historii. Valentina je ‚Démosthénes‘, jehož podvratné, štvavé články bojují proti nestvůrné moci Hvězdného kongresu, pána Sta světů. A Ender… Ender jako dítě velel válečné flotile, která zničila termiťany. Triumfem jeho života by bylo, kdyby dokázal zabránit, aby se to stalo znovu. A jeho tragédií by se mohlo stát, kdyby neuspěl. Třetí, poslední část „Lusitánské trilogie”, čtvrtá kniha Enderovské série. Orson Scott Card se opět vrací k příběhu Endera Wiggina, dětského hrdiny Hugem a Nebulou oceněné Enderovy hry, který až jako muž odčinil xenocidu tím, že znovu přivedl k životu Královnu úlu. Nyní je jeho adoptovaný svět, Lusitanie, v ohrožení téže ničivé zbraně, kterou on sám použil před třemi tisíci lety. Lusitanie je domovem tří inteligentních druhů: pegueninů, původních obyvatel Lusitanie, velké kolonie lidí a Enderem znovuoživené Královny úlu. Ale z důvodu existence smrtelně nebezpečného viru se Hvězdný kongres rozhodl, i přes tento fakt, Lusitanii zničit. Enderova stará přítelkyně, počítačová inteligence Jane, se nechá Hvězdným kongresem odhalit, když se pokouší zastavit Lusitanskou flotilu. A nyní události spějí k rozuzlení. Bude provedena další xenocida? Nebo se povede vše vyřešit smírnou cestou? Jak dopadne příběh tisíciletého života Endera Wiggina? To vše se můžete dočíst v této knize. „Nový Enderův příběh z Bitevní školy” Pro všechny fanoušky Orsona Scotta Carda je tu krátký román s Enderem ještě z dob výcviku na Bitevní škole, kde jsou v rámci utužování vojenské morálky oslavy náboženských svátků přísně zakázány. Děti pocházející z mnoha národů a kultur nemohou být podle instruktorů ve svém výcviku rušeny záležitostmi, jež by mohli přerůstat ve spory mezi zastánci jednotlivých nauk. Ale Dink Meeker, jeden ze starších studentů, s tím nesouhlasí. Má za to, že prostý zvyk předávání darů nemá nic společného s náboženstvím a jednoho dne zákaz poruší... Tento malý, ovšem významný akt vzdoru vyvolá překvapivě velkou rozepři mezi studenty a představiteli školy. Vede rovněž ke vzniku několika nečekaných spojenectví, zvláště po příchodu nového studenta Zecka Morgana. V konečném důsledku však každého z Bitevní školy postaví před otázku, na jakou stranu se postaví. Orson Scott Card se ještě jednou a možná naposledy vrací do prostředí, jehož vznik ho celosvětově proslavil. Žádný čtenář oblíbené Enderovy hry by si neměl tento drobný, ovšem velice působivý příběh nechat ujít.

Planeta zvaná Harmonie byla osídlena lidmi před čtyřiceti miliony lety. Kolonie byla svěřena do péče umělé inteligence umístěné na oběžné dráze planety. Tento centrální počítač měl jediný příkaz: střežit obyvatele Harmonie. Ale teď je v nebezpečí on sám. Jeho systém se poškozuje. Během tisíce let vypukne na Harmonii katastrofická válka, pokud nebude opraven. Centrální počítač určil, že se lidé musí vrátit zpět na ztracenou Zemi; někomu na Harmonii musí být vrácena znalost toho, jak cestovat vesmírem, aby planeta byla zachráněna od pohromy. Pro jednu z rodin, vybranou těsně před blížící se občanskou válkou, se tak navždy změní celý život. Planeta Harmonie je jedním z nejlepších Cardových děl. Sága o návratu lidí na Zemi nemůže být nikdy zapomenuta.

Je to svět mimozemšťanů, ale kontrolován lidmi už milénia. A legenda stará jako hvězdy jim vládne: až sedm krát sedm krát sedmý lidský heptarcha bude korunován, bude to Kristos a přinese věčnou spásu… nebo zkázu vesmíru. Hypomené je dcerou zákonného heptarchy, ale stejně jako její otec před ní slouží uzurpátorovi, který uchvátil trůn a zničil její rodinu… Hypomeně je sedmnáct, je velmi krásná, a proroctví se začíná naplňovat. Všechny formy života na planetě Imakulata s napětím a hrůzou čekají, zda se vydá k Patě nebes a setká se s Nečorvem. A mudrci odešli…

Americká říše se rozrůstá až příliš rychle a rozpory v domácí politice ji zároveň přivádějí na pokraj kolapsu. Válka slov mezi pravicí a levicí přechází do otevřené války, ačkoliv většina lidí chce jen žít dál v klidu. Bitva mezi ultramoderními zbraněmi na jedné straně a pěšími vojáky na straně druhé ničí města a začíná ovládat venkov. Nicméně drtivá většina, jež nechce nic jiného než ukončit krveprolití a vrátit zemi do časů mírové existence, disponuje vlastní technikou, zbraněmi a geniálními stratégy. Když se americký sen rozplývá v násilnostech, kdo dokáže zajistit, aby národ a vláda táhly za jeden provaz? A na čí stranu se postavíte vy?
