Stáčení Temného piva je oproti tomuto steampunkovému příběhu čistou fantasy, ale po bok se mu řadí skvěle vystavěnou zápletkou, rychle se odvíjejícím dějem, barvitým panoptikem postav, důkladnou znalostí historických reálií a kousavým humorem. Málokdy se v dějinách fantasy podařilo tak znamenitě skloubit vznešenost a patos hrdinství, jež jsou tomuto žánru vlastní, s humorem a lidskou blízkostí postav.

Když je literární vědec Brendan Doyle dotázán, zda by nechtěl mít přednášku o Samuelu Tayloru Coleridgeovi, netuší, že jde o začátek dobrodružství, ve kterém se přenese časem na počátek devatenáctého století – do roku 1810.
