Harriet Welschová je dvanáctiletá dívka, jejíž rodiče jsou kvůli pracovním záležitostem často pryč a ona je tedy opatrována chůvou Catherine Goylovou. Harriet se tedy naučí hrát sisama a začne si popisovat hromady sešitů. Zapisuje všechno o lidech, které potká a které zná. Píše si o tom, jak vypadají, jak se chovají, co dělají... Chce být detektivkou a o každém vědět vše, proto se každý den převléká do svého „vyzvědačského“ oblečení a podniká svou obvyklou trasu po městě, kde pozoruje a zapisuje si věci o životě svých sousedů.
