V nejmenované zemi a v dávné, avšak blíže neurčené době je na tržišti pro nesplnění úkolu surově zbit obchodníkem jeho malý syn David. Svědkem tohoto aktu je i Pastýř, který si uvědomuje, že trest byl vykonán v souladu s právem, neboť David zaspal a nepřipravil svému otci čerstvé ovoce a zeleninu, které chtěl už od rána prodávat.
