Psychologický román italské autorky je retrospektivním příběhem podivně odcizeného vztahu otce a dcery, který krystalizuje během prázdninové cesty na výletní lodi. Dospělá žena po třiceti letech vzpomíná na jediný čas, kdy byla ve společnosti otce, s nímž se po rozvodu rodičů stýkala jen formálně a zřídka. Bylo to na čtrnáctidenní výletní plavbě z Benátek do Řecka. Starý a nemocný muž dospívající dceru vzal na prázdninový výlet pořádaný členy jeho spolku, a osamělá dívka mezi dospělými na palubě měla poprvé možnost zamyslet se nad tím, kdo je vlastně její otec, jaká byla rodina, z níž pochází. Touto cestou vstupuje hrdinka do světa dospělých a přijímá stoicky svou samotu i vizi budoucího života. Mezi otcem a dívkou nedojde během cesty k žádnému sblížení a otec krátce nato umírá, ale žena, která se z dívky stala, odtažitost a zdrženlivou rezignaci, kterou jí otec svou nenápadnou existencí odkázal, v sobě chová jako poznání i životní postoj. Román je psaný velice civilně a úsporně, veškeré výrazové prostředky však umocňují vyjádření dokonalé atmosféry odcizení, izolace a neúprosného plynutí času mezi životem a smrtí. Román získal prestižní cenu Premio Viareggio v roce 2002.
