Román je samostatným pokračováním dějů "Karety" /Svoboda 1978/ a "Diktatůry" /Svoboda 1981/. Je součástí tzv. mahagonového cyklu, rozsáhlého eposu, v němž světoznámy autor barvitě a přesvědčivě zachycuje život, utrpení a vzpouru indiánskych dělníků, těžících v drsných podmínkáchmexické džungle mahagonové dřevo.

Další vydání světoznámého románu.... Německy píšící autor s uměleckým mistrovstvím vypráví dramatický příběh posádky lodi, určené majiteli ke ztroskotání, aby mohla rejdařská společnost vyinkasovat pojistnou prémii. Na této lodi hrůzy se ocitl jako svědek i námořník, který poprvní světové válce uvízl bez dokladů na molu amsterodamského přístavu a byl pak jako nežádoucí cizinec deportován z jedné země do druhé.

Román je poslední z tzv. mahagonové řady Travenových románů. Navazuje bezprostředně na „Vzpouru pověšenců“, je však dějově samostatný. Dělníci z dřevorubeckých montétií se vzbouří proti svým vykořisťovatelům. Vzpoura se rozroste po celé zemi.
