Po představení teorie přechodového objektu a přechodových jevů Winnicott líčí, jak se v podpůrném prostředí při dostatečně dobré péči matky či mateřské postavy rozvíjí vědomí vlastního já, jeho vymezení vůči vnějšímu světu a co se odehrává v prostoru mezi vnitřní subjektivní a vnější objektivně vnímanou realitou.
