Je to kniha primárně nikoli o lásce, ale o moci, resp. o její perverzi v dominanci na jedné straně a submisivitě na straně druhé. Proč lidé podléhají autoritě a dokonce prožívají slast z moci, kterou nad nimi mají jiní? Proč je pro muže a ženy tak obtížné setkat se jako navzájem rovnocenní?
