Kniha Pojednání o toleranci, kterou napsal Jean Arouet de Voltaire jako jedno ze svých nejznámějších děl, se řadí k vrcholným dílům evropského osvícenství druhé půle 18. století. Voltaire napsal toto své pojednání na pozadí konkrétního projevu náboženské nesnášenlivosti, jakým byla justiční vražda francouzského hugenota Jeana Calase, k níž došlo ve městě Toulouse roku 1762. Skvělé prózy známého francouzského filozofa. Voltairov boj proti církvi a proti nepořádkům ve státě zapříčinil, že se často musel skrývat před svými pronásledovateli, jak osobně, tak literárně. Projevuje se to v jeho filozofických povídkách, kde často používá běžnou formu alegorie. Děj obvykle lokalizuje na místa odlehlá časově nebo prostorově a hovoří o konkrétních a aktuálních problémech své doby. Babylonské princezně dává žít několik tisíc let před Kristem, avšak její cestu po světě komentuje poznámkami, z nichž jasně vyplývá autorův dobový postoj k státnímu zřízení různých zemí v 18. století. Babylonská princezna je jeho nejlepší originální povídkou, která pranýřuje dobové mravy. V Prostáčikovi očima mladého Hurona sleduje rozporuplný obraz francouzských poměrů po odvolání Nantského ediktu.

Podtitul: čili, Rozum podle abecedy Sotva byl Voltairův Filosofický slovník vytištěn, vzbudil takový rozruch mezi vzdělanci a odpor ve vládních a kněžských kruzích, že tím byl Voltaire zastrašen a neváhal své autorství zapřít. V jednom svém dopise paní de Deffand píše: „Kdybych měl být obviněn, že jsem napsal Filosofický slovník, bylo by mi lépe, že bych se byl nenarodil.“ A na jiném místě d'Alembertovi: „A když již mluvíme o morálce: v tom zpropadeném slovníku je jí tolik, že se třesu, aby dílo i autor nebyli upáleni přičiněním nepřátel morálky a literatury.“ V září r. 1764 byl Filosofický slovník v Ženevě spálen rukou katovou, jako kniha bezbožná, nemorální a svatokrádežná, jež uvádí v posměch mysteria, dogmata, kázeň, autoritu božskou i lidskou atd. Rok nato byl dán papežem na index a téhož roku byl z nařízení pařížského parlamentu spálen zároveň s Rousseauovými Lettres écrites de la Montagne. Voltaire, chtěje od sebe odvrátit podezření, vydával slovník za společné dílo několika fingovaných autorů, jehož on sám se zúčastnil jen nepatrně. Přes toto popírání připravoval jeho nové, rozšířené vydání: „Tato strašná kniha,“ píše jednomu ze svých přátel, „učí od začátku až do konce, že se máme v pokoře klanět Bohu, vésti ctnostný život a věřit, že dvě a dvě jsou čtyři.“ Z předmluvy Emmy Horké

Stále aktuální nadčasová kousavá satira nevzdělanosti a bláhového optimismu. Próza, ve které autor kritizuje filozofii nekritického optimistického chování. Der französische Philosoph Voltaire (1694-1778) schrieb unnachgiebig für religiöse Toleranz, aber auch unerbittlich gegen die Religion und ihren Herrschaftsanspruch. Endlich versammelt nun ein Band alle fünf Katechismen Voltaires, in denen er das Thema der Religion auf Erden auslotet - zwei von ihnen erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung.Die Gattung Katechismus, in der die Glaubensinhalte einer Konfession in Frage und Antwort fixiert sind, wird von Voltaire völlig auf den Kopf gestellt. In den prägnanten Dialogen zeigt sich Voltaires Ausnahmetalent, scharfe Kritik und schwere Grundsatzfragen unterhaltsam zu erzählen, pointenreich, voller Ironie. Die Gespräche spielen im alten China, in Aleppo oder Japan, die Figuren sind skeptische Prinzen, angehende Pfarrer oder weltweise Gärtner. Voltaire spricht sich vehement gegen religiösen Fanatismus und Parteienhass, gegen Verfolgung von Andersdenkenden, gegen klerikalen Machtmissbrauch und Aberglauben aus. Aber er meißelt in den fünf Katechismen seine Religionskritik nicht in Stein, sondern öffnet durch Witz und Lebendigkeit Raum für eigenes Nachdenken, das sich von Autoritäten löst.

Ici, l'Eros est subversif, la volupté mène à la philosophie, le plaisir vaut moins pour lui-même que comme valeur émancipatrice : Il révèle les apories d'une morale chrétienne hypocrite et contradictoire, il bouscule ses règles contre nature. Sans tabou ni fausse pudeur, au rythme d'un récit rapide, souvent allusif, toujours drôle, ces délicieux petits textes célèbrent le bonheur de la jouissance et de la pensée libre. L'immense œuvre de Voltaire (1694-1778), un des plus grandis auteurs de tous les temps, n'est aujourd'hui que très partiellement connue. Ce sont surtout ses contes ou romans "philosophiques'', Micromégas, Zadig ou Candide, que tout le monde lit. Il existe pourtant parmi les contes d'autres pièces, plus légères, que les contemporains appréciaient particulièrement et que Voltaire n'a jamais cessé de produire tout au long de sa vie : des contes " galants " en prose ou en vers, qui sont tous réunis dans ce volume.
