Kniha Pojednání o toleranci, kterou napsal Jean Arouet de Voltaire jako jedno ze svých nejznámějších děl, se řadí k vrcholným dílům evropského osvícenství druhé půle 18. století. Voltaire napsal toto své pojednání na pozadí konkrétního projevu náboženské nesnášenlivosti, jakým byla justiční vražda francouzského hugenota Jeana Calase, k níž došlo ve městě Toulouse roku 1762. Voltaire využil tohoto smutného případu, aby v souvislosti se záležitostí Jeana Calase, nespravedlivě odsouzeného a hrůzně umučeného, a s mnoha podobnými případy náboženského pronásledování, podnikl na svou dobu pozoruhodné historické a filosofické zdůvodnění přednosti náboženské tolerance před jejím opakem v dějinách a ve své současnosti. Voltairova kniha, ústící ve vášnivou obhajobu tolerance a svobody vyznání, zaznamenala hned v době svého vydání veliký úspěch a měla celoevropský ohlas. Patří nepochybně mezi ta díla evropského osvícenství, jež měla praktický dopad. Její morální étos není jistě zanedbatelný ani dnes, v době jiných projevů nesnášenlivosti, než jakým čelil Voltaire a jeho současníci, zůstává ovšem rovněž pozoruhodným svědectvím o osobnosti, odvaze, publicistické schopnosti a intelektuálním rozměru svého autora.

Podtitul: čili, Rozum podle abecedy Sotva byl Voltairův Filosofický slovník vytištěn, vzbudil takový rozruch mezi vzdělanci a odpor ve vládních a kněžských kruzích, že tím byl Voltaire zastrašen a neváhal své autorství zapřít. V jednom svém dopise paní de Deffand píše: „Kdybych měl být obviněn, že jsem napsal Filosofický slovník, bylo by mi lépe, že bych se byl nenarodil.“ A na jiném místě d'Alembertovi: „A když již mluvíme o morálce: v tom zpropadeném slovníku je jí tolik, že se třesu, aby dílo i autor nebyli upáleni přičiněním nepřátel morálky a literatury.“ V září r. 1764 byl Filosofický slovník v Ženevě spálen rukou katovou, jako kniha bezbožná, nemorální a svatokrádežná, jež uvádí v posměch mysteria, dogmata, kázeň, autoritu božskou i lidskou atd. Rok nato byl dán papežem na index a téhož roku byl z nařízení pařížského parlamentu spálen zároveň s Rousseauovými Lettres écrites de la Montagne. Voltaire, chtěje od sebe odvrátit podezření, vydával slovník za společné dílo několika fingovaných autorů, jehož on sám se zúčastnil jen nepatrně. Přes toto popírání připravoval jeho nové, rozšířené vydání: „Tato strašná kniha,“ píše jednomu ze svých přátel, „učí od začátku až do konce, že se máme v pokoře klanět Bohu, vésti ctnostný život a věřit, že dvě a dvě jsou čtyři.“ Z předmluvy Emmy Horké

Candide je románem nebo spíše filosofickou povídkou, v níž autor popisuje neutuchající lásku, rozličná utrpení, jež prožívají hlavní postavy příběhu během svých pestrých dobrodružných životů, kritizuje rovněž společenské hodnoty, založené na zlodějství, a optimismus, jenž je v díle propagován filosofem Panglosem, přesvědčeným, že vše je zařízeno dobře, i když se nám daří špatně, a vyzdvihuje práci, jež je vysvobozením člověka od všech útrap společnosti a díky níž se stává život alespoň trochu snesitelným. Dílo je rovněž vyvrcholením nekonečných sporů mezi Voltairem a J.J.Rousseauem, jejichž ideologie se ve své podstatě rozcházejí a oba filosofové proti sobě vystupovali nejen vzájemnou korespondencí, ale i odlišným zaměřením svých literárních děl.

Formosante le surprend, mais finit par lui pardonner après qu'il l'ait sauvée de l'Inquisition espagnole. Ce conte philosophique critique les régimes politiques et les religions, notamment le catholicisme, dont le pape, surnommé "le vieux des sept montagnes," impose des rites absurdes. Enfin, il illustre l'inévitabilité de l'infidélité, même chez Amazan, considéré comme un jeune homme parfait.
