Japonská armáda byla unikátní směsí starověku a současnosti: moderní výzbroj a důmyslná taktika sloužila téměř středověkému kódu bezpodmínečné poslušnosti a bezohledné agrese. Tato publikace popisuje organizaci, výstroj, uniformy a složení japonských pozemních sil během bojů v Číně, Tichomoří i Barmě. Součástí knihy je schéma hodnostních označení, řada unikátních fotografií a 16 celobarevných příloh s přehledem uniforem.

When the Japanese Empire went to war with the Allies in December 1941, it had already been fighting in China for 10 years and set up 'puppet' governments designed to rule on behalf of the Japanese while firmly under their overall control. Chinese puppet soldiers ranged from the well-drilled and trained regular Army of the Last Emperor of China, Pu Yi, to the irregular Mongol cavalry who served alongside Japanese troops in the 'secret war' waged in the Mongolian hinterlands. The troops were dismissed as traitors by the Chinese fighting the Japanese. The fact that so many Chinese were willing to fight for the Japanese was embarrasing to all sides, and for this reason has been largely ignored in previous histories of the war in the East.

"From the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 until the Japanese surrender in August 1945, a multitude of military and civil-defense forces strove to support the Japanese war effort and latterly prepared to defend the Home Islands against invasion. During World War II, Japan was the world's most militarized society and by 1945 nearly every Japanese male over the age of 10 wore some kind of military attire, as did the majority of women and girls. In this volume, Philip Jowett reveals the many military and civil-defense organizations active in wartime Japan, while specially commissioned artwork and carefully chosen archive photographs depict the appearance of the men, women, and children involved in the Japanese war effort in the Home Islands throughout World War II." --Amazon.com
