Nun, sollte es geschehen, so mußte es ja geschehen, bevor ich sterbe." Seine alte, bis in seine Jugend zurückreichende, schwärmerische Liebe zu Deutschland ist Hamsun in seinen letzten Lebensjahrzehnten fast zum Verhängnis geworden. Seine Blindheit für die Schreckensherrschaft der Nazis, seine Aufforderung an die Norweger, sich mit der deutschen Besatzung doch abzufinden, empörte seine Landsleute und führte dazu, daß ihm nach dem Krieg der Prozeß gemacht wurde. Aus den Jahren 1945-1947, die er als über Achtzigjähriger zwangsweise unter Hausarrest, in Krankenhäusern und in einer psychiatrischen Anstalt verbringen mußte, stammt dieses Tagebuch. Es schildert Knut Hamsuns Erlebnisse von der Verhaftung bis zur Urteilsverkündung des Obersten Gerichts gege n ihn. Ein menschliches und ein zeitgeschichtliches Zeugnis von hohem Rang.
