V roce 1799 objevilo Napoleonovo vojsko v nilské deltě starověkou stélu. Nápis na ní, vyvedený ve třech různých písmech – starořeckém, koptském a hieroglyfickém – poskytl badatelům první vodítko pro rozluštění dva tisíce let starých egyptských hieroglyfů. O dalších dvacet let později nadaný Francouz jménem Jean-François Champollion hieroglyfy na stéle úspěšně rozluštil a způsobil tak revoluci v naší znalosti kultury starého Egypta. V Champollionově biografii Andrew Robinson podrobně rekonstruuje postup, kterým tento zakladatel egyptologie prolomil kód hieroglyfického písma: píše o jeho studiu obelisků v Římě a papyrů v evropských muzeích, rok se plavil po Nilu, zkoumal náhrobky v Údolí králů (i tento název pochází od něho). Popisuje také jeho soupeření s anglickým vědcem Thomasem Youngem, který si prvenství v rozluštění hieroglyfů nárokoval pro sebe. Champollionův život se však netočil jen kolem nilské stély: životopis si všímá i dalších rolí, jež ve svém krátkém životě sehrál – profesora v revoluční Francii, podporovatele Napoleona, vyhnance a kurátora v Louvru.
