    Johannes Brahms byl skladatel, jehož hudba vycházela z hlubokého humanismu a agnosticismu. Inspiroval se přírodou, literaturou a filozofií, přičemž jeho díla se vyznačují propracovanou strukturou a hloubkou. Brahms se stavěl proti antisemitismu a byl známý svou štědrostí a přístupností. Jeho hudba, často přirovnávaná k mistrům jako Bach a Beethoven, ovlivnila celou generaci skladatelů.

      Brahms composed these part songs for female chorus in 1860 while acting as Director of the Hamburg Women's Choir. Each song lasts around 3 minutes, and is accompanied by an ensemble of harp with two horns (a unique combination for Brahms). Texts are by Ruperti, Shakespeare, Eichendorff and 'Ossian' (with English translations by Jean Lunn). This is the vocal score, containing the harp (or piano) accompaniment and horn cues for rehearsal purposes.       Brahms's 'Sacred Song' ('Geistliches Lied') Op. 30 was composed in 1856 and takes the form of a double canon setting a text by Paul Fleming, starting with the line 'Let nothing ever grieve thee'. This edition is based on the famous Kurt Soldan edition for Edition Peters with an English translation by Walter E. Buszin. Buszin notes that there is much similarity between this work and the composer's 'German Requiem'.

      Composed in 1858, Brahms' first concerto was given its premiere in Hanover's Royal Theater on January 22, 1859 with the 25-year-old composer as soloist and the orchestra was conducted by Joseph Joachim. The new work got a cold reception in Hanover and a similar reaction was the response to the Leipzg performance 5 days later with the far more professional Gewandhaus orchestra. Undaunted, the work was received with great applause at the third performance in March, given in Hamburg. The concerto has been a staple of the concert repertoire for piano and orchestra ever since. The study score offered here is a corrected edition prepared by Clinton Nieweg and Robert Sutherland from the composer's manuscript, the first editions and other authoritative sources.
