Known as a poet who spoke of the history and suffering of the Jewish people, Nelly Sachs was, at the time she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966, highly regarded in her native Germany, frequently being described as a poet of reconciliation and healing, although whether she was is open to debate.

Nach dem Gedichtzyklus «Die Suchende», der im Spätherbst 1966 erschien, hat Nelly Sachs kein Buch mehr veröffentlicht. Zwar blieb sie literarisch tätig bis zum endgültigen Versagen ihrer physischen Kräfte. Dramatische Projekte beschäftigten sie fast ununterbrochen. Die lyrische Produktivität war, wie früher, mehr intermittierend; 1968 schrieb sie wieder mehrere Gedichte, zur Zusammenstellung eines Gedichtbandes kam es aber nicht.

Queste lettere senza destinatario (inedite anche in Germania fino al 2010), che Nelly Sachs scrive nei mesi successivi alla morte della madre, contengono in nuce tutti i temi della sua maturità artistica. Nate nel momento della collisione tra il lutto personale e la tragedia della Shoah, si configurano come una sorta di meditazione lirica sul confine della vita: diario di una metamorfosi che descrive la morte non come una perdita ma come una nuova nascita. Se la mistica ebraica è lo sfondo imprescindibile di questo testo che affronta la morte e lo sterminio in una sfera teologica trascendente, non manca in esso la dura concretezza del reale, il quotidiano presente con tutto il suo carico di dolore e di solitudine.
