Na přelomu 80. a 90. let vystoupala Lynchova kariéra do závratných výšin. K Modrému sametu (1986) přibyla Zběsilost v srdci (1990) a seriál Městečko Twin Peaks (pilotní film 1989), který změnil televizi. Lynch se stal věhlasnou ikonou postmoderní kultury a jeho filmy kultovním fenoménem. Fischerova monografie, která česky vyšla roku 1995, zachytila Davida Lynche v tomto vrcholném stadiu a podrobně a barvitě vylíčila celou jeho cestu od undergroundových počátků - půlnoční Mazací hlava (1977), přes první úspěch - „evropská zakázka" Sloní muž (1980) a první propadák - velkoprodukční sci-fi Duna (1984) až k filmové verzi záhady jménem Twin Peaks: Ohni se mnou pojď (1992). Po tomto hektickém období přebujelých aktivit a úspěchů přišel oddechový mezičas a poté zjevení v podobě hypnotické Lost Highway (1996).
