Kubánec Jose Raul Capablanca (1888-1942) byl 3. mistrem světa v šachu v letech 1921 - 1927. Kniha Šachové základy je český překlad jeho knihy vydané v New Yorku v roce 1934. Kniha obsahuje kapitoly o technice koncovek, vedení střední hry a zahájení, strategickém vedení střední hry, technice složitějších koncovek, dále je v knize obsažena obecná teorie jako přímý útok, iniciativa atd...Na konci jsou zařezeny potom ilustrativní partie komentované Capablancou.

Překlad známé Capablankovy učebnice, v angličtině známé pod názvem A Primer of Chess. Kniha byla mnohokrát dotiskována a byla přeložena i do jiných jazyků. Toto je první vydání v češtině.

Překlad knihy Emanuela Laskera o jeho zápase o mistra světa v šachu s Josém Raul Capablancou z roku 1921. Kniha je doplněna Capablancovým pojednáním o zápasu Lasker - Schlechter z roku 1910. Emanuel Lasker byl 3. mistr světa v šachu a Jose Raul Capablanca byl 4. mistr světa v šachu.

Capablanca v knize popisuje svou dosavadní šachovou kariéru a komentuje 35 svých vybraných partií. Materiál je chronologicky uspořádaný do 10 kapitol, na konci index soupeřů. José Raul Capablanca, 1888-1942, vydal poprvé tuto knihu v roce 1920 - krátce předtím, než v zápase s Laskerem získal titul mistra světa. Kniha byla přeložena do mnoha jazyků, v češtině vychází poprvé.
