LeRoi Jones, aka Amiri Baraka, zählte zu den umstrittensten US-amerikanischen Dichtern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er war leidenschaftlicher Kämpfer für die Sache der Schwarzen in Amerika, engagierte sich für den Zugang zu Bildung und Kunst, propagierte aber zunehmend offen Gewalt als Mittel zur Veränderung und entwickelte sich zum Haßprediger gegen die weiße Übermacht USA. Als Regierungskritiker bediente er sich scharfer und schonungsloser Worte, er irritierte aber auch mit misogynen, homophoben und antisemitischen Äußerungen. Diese versuchte er zwar später als »Jugendsünden« zu deklarieren und zurückzunehmen, doch er blieb bis zum Ende seines Lebens eine kontroverse Figur, an der sich die Geister bis heute scheiden – unabhängig von ihrer Hautfarbe. »Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note« ist LeRoi Jones’ erster Gedichtband, der 1961 veröffentlicht wurde und hiermit erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung erscheint.
