Nejslavnější autorův román z prostředí první světové války vypráví o generaci chlapců, kteří v roce 1914 rovnou ze školních lavic, s vlajícími prapory, nadšením a vojenskou hudbou, táhli na frontu, odkud se vrátili zničeni na duchu i na těle, přestože unikli smrtícím granátům. Mladí lidé, vychovaní svými učiteli k tomu, že umírání na bojišti je svatou povinností a otázkou cti, poznali skutečnou tvář nesmyslné války, a pokud se z ní někteří vrátili, nedokázali zakotvit v novém životě, nechápali ho - příliš děsivé byly zážitky ze zákopů, příliš živé vzpomínky na padlé kamarády. Román je krutou obžalobou a pravdivým obrazem tragédie války, která nezabíjí jednotlivce, ale mrzačí celé generace - nejstrašnější totiž není výbuch granátu, ale zasažené lidské srdce…

The grinning gargoyle, which mocked the solemnity of Gothic cathedrals, symbolises the violence, depravity and irreverence inherent in man which could not be suppressed by the church.
