Po smrti otce převezme péči o farmu, která patří rodu Brangwenů již dvě stě let, nejmladší syn Tom. Ožení se s emigrantkou Lydií Lenskou, vdovou po polském lékaři, která má z prvního manželství dceru Annu. Ta se ve velmi mladém věku provdá za svého nevlastního bratrance. Po počáteční harmonii se jejich vztah zkomplikuje a dochází mezi nimi k častým konfliktům. Anna nachází naplnění v mateřství a v péči o domácnost. Třetí generaci Brangwenů představuje její nejstarší dcera Ursula, kterou již neuspokojuje život na venkově a touží po vzdělání a nezávislosti.
