Vždycky mne zajímaly klíčové momenty Asimovovy říše: – Proč nejsou v Galaxii žádné jiné bytosti? – Jakou úlohu v ní sehrávají počítače? Zejména ve vztahu k robotům. – Jak skutečně vypadá psychohistorická teorie? – A nakonec: kdo je Hari Seldon – jako literární postava i jako člověk? Myšlenka napsat další romány o vesmíru Nadace pochází od Janet Asimovové a literární agentury spravující Asimovovo literární dílo.Když mne oslovili, začal jsem vhodně konstruovat komplexní křivku dějů a významů, které měly být zahrnuty do několika románů.Třebaže jsem o tom mluvil s několika spisovateli, nejvíce se proto zdálí vhodní dva autoři klasické SF, které rovněž Asimov ovlivnil a kteři byli schopni zvládnout problěm také technicky Greg Bear a David Brin. Bear, Brin a já jsme byli v neustálém kontaktu, když jsem psal první knihu, protože jsme zamýšlelí napsat tři samostatné romány, které nicméně dovedou své společné ústřední tajemství až do konce.
