Hlavní postavou je Becky, dcera francouzské tanečnice a neúspěšného malíře vynikající inteligencí a schopnostmi, jenž ji pomohou ve společenském postupu a právě na její postavě Thackeray ukazuje, jak fungovala chamtivá a požitkářská anglická společnost doby napoleonských válek. V roce 2004 byl slavný román zfilmován s Reese Witherspoon v hlavní roli.
