With People of the 20th Century, August Sander created a monumental work that is unique in the history of photography and a classic of photographic literature. Sander conceived this large-scale project, which he ultimately never completed, in the 1920s. He was to spend the rest of his life working on it, his objective nothing less than a complete typological portrait of contemporary society. English edition.
One of the legendary classics among German photography books, August Sander's Face of Our Time, is now available again. Compiled by August Sander himself, the book was first published in 1929, with a foreword by German writer Alfred Dublin. On its first publication, it was advertised as follows: "The sixty shots of twentieth-century Germans which the author includes in his Face of Our Time represent only a small selection drawn from August Sander's major work, which he began in 1910 and which he has spent twenty years producing and adding fresh nuances to. The author has not approached this immense self-imposed task from an academic standpoint, nor with scientific aids, and has received advice neither from racial theorists nor from social researchers. He has approached his task as a photographer from his own immediate observations of human nature and human appearances, of the human environment, and with an infallible instinct for what is genuine and essential.

Antlitz der Zeit. 60 Fotos deutscher Menschen war die erste Portraitsammlung von August Sander (1876–1964), die 1929 im Münchner Kurt Wolff/Transmare Verlag erschien. Das Buch erregte sofort große mediale Aufmerksamkeit und wurde in den Feuilletons namhafter Tageszeitungen, literarischen Beilagen und Fachzeitschriften hoch gelobt. Zu den Rezensenten gehörten prominente Persönlichkeiten wie Walter Benjamin, Kurt Tucholsky und Walker Evans. Ursprünglich als Teil eines umfassenderen Portraitprojekts gedacht, das Sander in den 20er Jahren verfolgte, bestärkte der Erfolg des Buches seine künstlerischen Ambitionen. Doch der Nationalsozialismus führte zu einem abrupten Ende: Antlitz der Zeit fiel der Zensur zum Opfer, ebenso wie viele seiner prominenten Rezensenten und die Medien, die darüber berichteten. Diese Ausgabe bietet mehr als eine Neuauflage von Sanders Klassiker. Sie enthält rund 80 Artikel, die zwischen 1929 und 1933 in der Presse veröffentlicht wurden und Teil des August Sander Archivs der Photographischen Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur sind.
