Bohatě ilustrovaná odborná monografie sleduje van Gogha od raných ponurých obrazů, na nichž zachytil bídu dělníků a rolníků ve své vlasti, přes pařížské období naplněné jasnými barvami až k jeho posledním rokům stráveným pod horkým jižním sluncem v Arles. Právě zde konečně objevil světlo, které je hlavním znakem nenapodobitelného van Goghova stylu. V horečnatém výbuchu tvůrčí energie, který poznamenal poslední dva a půl roku jeho života v Arles, Saint-Rémy a Auvers-sur-Oise, vytvořil 465 obrazů, na nichž spočívá jeho nesmrtelnost.

Podtitul: 1881–1973: Génius století Česká verze. Výtvarný potenciál zdědil zřejmě po svých předcích, jejichž stopy se dají vysledovat až do 16. století. Svá učňovská léta prožil na akademiích celého Španělska, ale pravým zlomem bylo setkání s pařížským uměleckým prostředím. Zde našel inspiraci pro svůj další umělecký růst. Po tzv. modrém a růžovém období přichází jeho nejvlastnější poloha – kubismus, svět viděný najednou z mnoha pohledů.

Život a dílo ruského malíře židovského původu. Představitel pařížské školy. V jeho díle je znát poučení analytickým kubismem, orfismem a lidovým uměním. Zobrazoval fantastické výjevy snové atmosféry s prvky z umělcova života a především z ruského folklóru.

Česká verze. Začínal ve skupině impresionistů, ale jeho neposedná duše ho poháněla k jiným zkušenostem a pohledům. Nevydržel déle najednom místě a vyhledával nové bohem zapomenuté krajiny pro svou inspiraci. Proto je jeho styl nezaměnitelný, nedotknutý salonním stylem.
