Baladicky laděný příběh venkovské dívky Tess je nejvášnivější obžalobou morálky, jakou si lze představit. Román Thomase Hardyho Tess z D’Urbervillů patří k nejslavnějším viktoriánským románům a na čtenářské oblibě neztratil dodnes. Ve své době vzbudil obrovský rozruch a náležitě bouřlivou odezvu, zvláště díky autorově vášnivé obžalobě puritánské viktoriánské morálky. Podobně jako většina Hardyho ostatních románů se i Tess z D’Urbervillů odehrává ve fiktivním jihoanglickém hrabství Wessex; jeho hlavní hrdinkou je venkovská dívka Tess, jejíž upřímnost, citlivost a mravní nesmlouvavost naráží na pokrytecké konvence okolí a postupně vede k hrdinčině tragédii. Baladický příběh navíc působivě dokresluje časový rámec knihy: do poklidných venkovských končin začínají doléhat ozvěny společenských změn vyvolaných industrializací; lidé začínají ztrácet staré jistoty a mají před sebou náhle budoucnost zbavenou opor – ale zároveň i nové možnosti. Tato situace dává autorovi podnět k filosofickému zamyšlení nad osudovými silami, ovlivňujícími úděl člověka.
