The biosafety resource book stems from the experience gained in biosafety capacity development projects and is based on the materials developed by the lecturers who have taught in the training courses organized to date.The box includes five books whose subjects Introduction to molecular biology and genetic engineering, ecological aspects, risk analysis, test and post-release monitoring of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and legal aspects. The resource book aims at providing biosafety regulators, policy makers and members of the national biosafety committees with reference materials that can be readily consulted beyond the training events, when the need arises.

The main objective of this consultation was to review the scientific basis and procedures to establish effective post-release monitoring of genetically modified (GM) crops and develop guidelines to strengthen the capacities of member countries to design and carry out monitoring programmes. The major outputs of the meeting a review of scientific criteria and procedures that address the technical aspects of monitoring environmental effects of GM crops; two strategies that could be used as the basis for efficient monitoring programmes; and recommendations for scientists managing the monitoring process, policy and decision-makers, FAO and other relevant international agencies.

Issues authoritative recommendations concerning nutritional requirements and safe ranges of intake for nineteen trace elements important to human health. Representing the consensus reached by a large number of international experts, the book aims to give scientists and those responsible for nutrition planning a solid basis for assessing dietary intakes of trace elements, detecting deficiencies and excesses, and recognizing the clinical features of related disorders. Throughout, guidelines and advice respond to greatly expanded knowledge about the significant impact that even subtle differences in trace elements can have on health and disease. The core of the report, which has three parts, provides authoritative recommendations on the nutritional significance, requirements for health, and safe range of daily intakes for nineteen trace elements in three categories. These include essential elements, such as iodine and zinc, probably essential elements, such as manganese and silicon, and potentially toxic elements, such as fluoride, lead, cadmium and mercury, which may also have some essential functions at low levels.

Flavours and fragrances are an important group of non-wood forest products. This publication contains information about sources, uses, manufacturing processes, markets, research needs and development potential of nine selected flavours and fragrances of plant origin. The selected flavours and fragrances represent the different varieties or types of the product. Countless numbers of such flavours and fragrances have found their way via essential oils into everyday life, for foods, drinks and confectionary items; products of personal use such as perfumes, deodorants, shampoos, soaps, toothpastes and mouth washes; pharmaceutical preparations to mask disagreeable tastes; items used in the house or office or in industry such as air fresheners, detergents, cleaning agents and the like; tobacco products and so on. The purpose of this publication is to disseminate useful information on this important group of products and thereby to promote their development.
