Dva přední francouzští historici-medievalisté v knize shromáždili přes osm desítek hesel, samostatných a ucelených esejů, věnovaných podstatným skutečnostem a tématům středověkého života: nalezneme mezi nimi jak tradiční témata politických dějin („Král“, „Šlechta“, „Válka a křížová výprava“), dějin hospodářských („Peníze“, „Řemeslníci“, „Půda“), kulturních („Katedrála“, „Literatura a literatury“, „Poutnictví“, „Symbol“), tak hesla věnovaná základním vrstevnicím mentální krajiny středověkého člověka, často už pouhým názvem naznačující napětí mezi protikladnými složkami pojednávaných témat: „Mužství a ženství“, „Řád a stavy“, „Střed a periferie“, „Svoboda a otroctví“, „Ústní a písemné“. Stranou nezůstávají ani „periferie“ středověkého Západu: „Byzanc a Západ“, „Islám“ či „Moře“. Složení autorského kolektivu je podobně rozmanité – převažují v něm autoři francouzští, ale vedle nich nalézáme i odborníky z Itálie, Německa, Anglie, Spojených států, Polska i Ruska. Podařilo se tak encyklopedii vtisknout celoevropský rozměr, byť její zaměření zůstává v první řadě západoevropské a v samém centru pozornosti je pochopitelně Francie. Díky knize dojde čtenář k hlubšímu pochopení oné nejednoznačné, vzrušující a v mnohém klíčové epochy evropských dějin.

"This preliminary and interim report of the international and interconfessional committee of the Hebrew Old Testament Text Project, sponsored by the United Bible Societies, is both tentative and summary. It is being made available to the Bible translators and scholars on a periodic basis, so as to provide a summary analysis of the continuing work of the Committee ... in view of the practical goals of this project, the selection of textual problems has been governed by two considerations: (1) the textual problems should involve significant differences of meaning, and (2) they should be those which are likely to come to the attention of Bible translators as the result of their consulting one or more of the four most widely used texts in modern languages, namely, the Revised Standard Version (RSV), the Jerusalem Bible in French (J), the Revised Luther Bible in German (L), and the New English Bible (NEB). Most of the textual problems treated in this preliminary report are noted in the apparatus of the Third Edition of the Kittel text of the Hebrew Old Testament, and hence the reader of this report may consult the Kittel text for supplementary textual evidence"--Pg. Qui est Dieu ? Que dit-il de lui-même ? Ce livre propose une méthode simple pour répondre à cette question simple : il s'agit d'apprendre à lire la Bible. Lire la Bible pour retrouver, d'étape en étape, la cohérence inspirée par l'Esprit. Lire la Bible pour chercher à entendre, à travers les multiples voix qui s'expriment, celle de l'Auteur unique et la laisser entrer en résonance avec son peuple d'aujourd'hui. Bref, lire la Bible en " amateur " - si l'on se souvient que le mot " amateur " vient du verbe " aimer ".
