Out of all of the media art competitions, the Prix Ars Electronica has the richest tradition in the world. Awarded every year since 1987, the competition is considered a barometer of trends in global media art, thanks to its consistency and the large number of high-quality submissions it receives. Containing many pictures and texts, as well as statements by the jury, the book assembles the artworks recognized in 2018 in the categories of Computer Animation, Digital Communities, Interactive Art+, and u19 – CREATE YOUR WORLD. In addition, the publication again features a “best-of” selection of works submitted to the European Commission’s STARTS Prize competition. This highly remunerated competition focuses on innovative projects that deal with a combination of science, technology, and art (= Science, Technology and ARTS). Der Prix Ars Electronica stellt seit 1987 als Wettbewerb für CyberArts ein international beachtetes Trendbarometer der aktuellen Medienkunst dar. Bislang haben Künstler aus aller Welt mit rund 25 000 Werken ihre künstlerischen Statements im Bereich aktueller Medien- und Computerkunst abgegeben. CyberArts 2004 dokumentiert die von einem Team internationaler Experten ausgewählten besten Arbeiten der Wettbewerbskategorien »Computeranimation/Visual Effects«, »Digital Musics«, »Interaktive Kunst«, »Net Vision« und dem nationalen Jugendwettbewerb »u19 - freestyle computing« in Text und Bild. Anlässlich des 25-jährigen Bestehens der Ars Electronica ist die Kategorie »Digital Communities« hinzugekommen, in der zwei Goldene Nicas an Internetprojekte mit großer soziopolitischer Bedeutung verliehen wurden. Neu eingerichet wurde außerdem das Kunst- und Technologiestipendium »[the next idea]«. Das umfangreiche Buch wird von einer DVD mit einigen der besten Computeranimationen und Visual Effects, darunter auch dem preisgekrönten Film „Ryan“ von Chris Landreth in voller Länge (13:55 Min.), sowie einer CD mit Beispielen der Kategorie »Digital Musics« begleitet. The annual Ars Electronica festival acts as a communal platform for artists and researchers working in different disciplines in the area of digital media design. Since 1987, artists from over 60 countries have submitted more than 20,000 pieces to the festival's Prix Ars Electronica, noted as a barometer of international trends in new media. For the first time, this voluminous publication comes complete with both a DVD and CD, featuring excerpts of the best computer animations, visual effects and digital music in the festival.
