The Prix Ars Electronica, considered a trend barometer of global media art, is the most tradition-steeped media art competition in the world. With numerous images, texts and statements by the jury, the book assembles those innovative works that were awarded prizes in 2016.

Begun in 1979, the annual Ars Electronica Festival for Art, Technology and Society is one of the world's foremost media art festivals, perennially on the hunt for innovation. Repair--the theme of the 2010 festival--invites experts in a range of fields to imagine alternative futures, tackling pressing issues of climate change, financial crisis and surveillance practices, among others.

Der Prix Ars Electronica stellt seit 1987 als Wettbewerb für CyberArts ein international beachtetes Trendbarometer der aktuellen Medienkunst dar. Bislang haben Künstler aus aller Welt mit rund 25 000 Werken ihre künstlerischen Statements im Bereich aktueller Medien- und Computerkunst abgegeben. CyberArts 2004 dokumentiert die von einem Team internationaler Experten ausgewählten besten Arbeiten der Wettbewerbskategorien »Computeranimation/Visual Effects«, »Digital Musics«, »Interaktive Kunst«, »Net Vision« und dem nationalen Jugendwettbewerb »u19 - freestyle computing« in Text und Bild. Anlässlich des 25-jährigen Bestehens der Ars Electronica ist die Kategorie »Digital Communities« hinzugekommen, in der zwei Goldene Nicas an Internetprojekte mit großer soziopolitischer Bedeutung verliehen wurden. The annual Ars Electronica festival acts as a communal platform for artists and researchers working in different disciplines in the area of digital media design. Since 1987, artists from over 60 countries have submitted more than 20,000 pieces to the festival's Prix Ars Electronica, noted as a barometer of international trends in new media.

Weltweit arbeiten KA1/4nstler, Wissenschaftler und Forscher unterschiedlicher Bereiche an der Gestaltung der digitalen Medien und verschreiben sich dem Medium Computer abseits industrieller Normen. Sie erforschen den Cyberspace als erweiterten Kommunikationsraum mit all seinen MAglichkeiten, aber auch Grenzen, und formulieren kA1/4nstlerisch-wissenschaftlich die drAngenden Fragen einer Gesellschaft im Wandel. Digital Musics trifft auf Visual Effects und Internet, Profis der interaktiven Kunst auf Computeranimation und Internet-Wizzards.
