    Autor se již od roku 1969 zabývá výukou angličtiny jako cizího jazyka (TESOL) a stále více se věnuje vzdělávání učitelů v tomto oboru. Fasciniert ho interakce mezi osobním a profesním rozvojem a to, jak nejlépe dosáhnout individuálního rozvoje v sociální interakci. Jeho psaní se posunulo od akademické prózy k sdílení zkušeností a společnému úsilí o pochopení světa. Ve své práci zkoumá vzdělávání učitelů TESOL, přičemž využívá reinterpretace mýtů a úryvků ze svých vlastních zkušeností, aby načrtl obraz oboru, jak ho formoval.
