Auf die Einleitung folgen 26 Kapitel, in denen deutlich wird, dass die Tiere den Geburtstag des Freundes keineswegs vergessen haben. Die große Überraschungsparty steckt nämlich mitten in der Vorbereitung. Das Buch kann den Buchstabenlehrgang durch das ganze Schuljahr begleiten. In jedem Kapitel geht es um einen Buchstaben, der dann in möglichst vielen Wörtern in diesem Kapitel vorkommt. Die Kapitel können zur Buchstabeneinführung in beliebiger Reihenfolge vorgelesen werden, so dass sie an die Abfolge im verwendeten Lehrwerk angepasst werden können. Es bietet sich an, die Wörter mit dem Buchstaben gemeinsam zu sammeln und auch die Lautposition innerhalb des Wortes zu bestimmen.

Schweini Schwein hat einen recht schwierigen Tag. Denn leider verschwindet sein geliebter Schmetterling. Das macht das Schwein furchtbar traurig. Zunächst versucht es, den Schmetterling wieder zu finden. Als die Suche erfolglos bleibt, beschließt das Schwein, sich erst mal um sich selbst zu kümmern. Und siehe da, mit ganz viel Selbstliebe und Achtsamkeit folgt zum Schluss doch noch ein Happy End. Die Geschichte in Reimform ist humorvoll geschrieben und illustriert. Sie eignet sich sehr gut zum Vorlesen und Schmunzeln. Außerdem kommen auf jeder Seite besonders viele Wörter mit "sch" vor, so dass sich das Buch auch zur Lauteinführung in der Grundschule einsetzen lässt.

Im kleinen Städtchen Geröll könnten die Menschen eigentlich friedlich und glücklich miteinander leben, wäre da nicht dieses riesige Problem. Auf einem der Berge oberhalb der Stadt ist ein Riese in eine Höhle eingezogen. Obwohl dieser eigentlich recht gemütlich ist, bereitet er den Bewohnern der Stadt große bzw. besser gesagt riesige Probleme. Als selbst der König und seine Gelehrten verzweifelt sind, zieht der kleine und auch sehr mutige Junge Julius los, um das Problem mit dem Riesen zu klären und damit die Stadt zu retten. Das Buch lässt sich auch in der 2. oder 3. Klasse als Klassenlektüre einsetzen. An einigen Stellen kann das Lesen unterbrochen und die Geschichte selbst weitergeschrieben werden. Zahlreiche Reime laden außerdem zu Wortspielen ein. Letztendlich kann das Buch auch dazu motivieren, selbst Märchen zu schreiben.

Die kleine Hexe Agatha will zum 350. Geburtstag ihrer Mama einen ganz besonderen Zaubertrank, nämlich den märchenhaften Ideentrank, brauen. Bestimmt würde das auch super funktionieren, wäre da nicht ihr kleiner, nerviger Bruder Eusebius, der einfach nicht die Finger von ihrem Zaubertrankkessel lassen kann. Es kommt, wie es kommen muss. Eusebius ruiniert den Zaubertrank und mit einer riesigen Explosion landen die beiden Geschwister mitten in einem Märchen. Und was nun? Eines ist sicher: bevor sie dort nicht das ein oder andere Problem gelöst haben, werden sie nicht zurück nach Hause kommen...

Artist Rineke Dijkstra has appropriated the formal qualities of the studio portrait from the early part of this century--taking the convention of the full length, frontal and centrally composed portrait to its logical limits, she is able to penetrate to the core of her subjects. Each photograph is marked with a precise date and location, suggesting a conscious evocation of the work of the early 20th century photographer August Sander and his project to document the ''Citizens of the Twentieth Century.'' Dijkstra's photographs stand by themselves, bearing no reference to personal circumstances or the specific geographical details of the location--the power of her images lies in an intimate psychological connection between artist, sitter, and viewer.
