Dickensův Příběh dvou měst (1859) byl přeložen do češtiny již několikrát a patřil u nás k nejoblíbenějším a nejčtenějším Dickensovým spisům. Bylo tomu tak především proto, že líčí jedno z nejzajímavějších a nejbouřlivějších údobí moderních dějin, dobu francouzské buržoasní revoluce z roku 1789, a že jeho bohatý a napínavý děj i barvité líčení prostředí neobyčejně vábily čtenářovu pozornost a fantasii. Kromě toho patří Příběh dvou měst k formálně nejdokonalejším z Dickensových spisů. Ač nevelký rozsahem, je nabit dějem, líčením osudů celé řady postav, obrazy historických událostí.
