Autor zde zkoumá, jak by svět mohl být změněn „pomalým sklem“ – sklem, které propouští světlo nesmírně pomalu, takže když se díváte skrz okno, vidíte, co bylo na jeho druhé straně léta předtím. Kniha ve svém souhrnu demonstruje, že tento zdánlivě jednoduchý vynález má schopnost vyvolat řadu dramatických změn, ale také ukazuje, jak jsou různým způsobem změněny životy několika konkrétních lidí.

Lo scienziato di questo romanzo non è pazzo e non è nemmeno un genio. Il suo laboratorio non è in cantina ma in uno stabilimento di media grandezza. La sua invenzione arriva dopo lunghe ricerche volte in tutt'altra direzione, e viene brevettata e venduta per tutt'altri scopi.
