Původním povoláním byla učitelka, nejdřív psala příspěvky do novin o pedagogice a až později se začala věnovat dětské literatuře. Jako první byla sbírka veršů pro děti. Koncem 30. let vydala Pohádky na dobrou noc, ve 40. letech pak dobrodružné příběhy jako Správná pětka či Tajná sedma určené větším dětem a řadu knih ze školního prostředí, například Kamarádky nebo Podařená dvojčata. Českým dětem může být známa také prostřednictvím britských a kanadských televizních adaptací její knižní série Noddy, kterou vysílala ČT v pořadu Kouzelná školka.
