This book gathers international voices from the field of ethnomusicology discussing the socio-political relevance of the discipline. The articles draw from contemporary discourses that take into account the role of music and dance in shaping social and political realities. An important field connected to political relevance is heritage, either in connection with the UNESCO or with archives. Ontologies of indigenous groups and their relevance in knowledge production is discussed in ethnomusicology nowadays as well as the possibilities of decolonising the discipline. Two articles from ethno-choreology explore dance from the gender perspective and in the post-socialist political structures. Different approaches from applied ethnomusicology deal with social justice, participatory dialogical practice, and the socio-political relevance of performance. Forced migration is seen as comprehensive topic for future ethnomusicology. The contents of the book mirror influential discourses of ethnomusicology today that will definitely shape the future development of the discipline.

Veränderung und Übergang sind Teil des Lebens. Wie hängt Musik damit zusammen? Vielfältige Antworten auf diese Frage geben die AutorInnen dieses Buches, deren Beiträge neue Sichtweisen und überraschende Konnotationen ermöglichen. So geht es um Überlegungen über das Hören von Musik an der Grenze zwischen Natur und Kultur, um musikalische Rituale des Übergangs am Beispiel der Mitternachtsquadrille bei Wiener Bällen, um den Funktionswechsel von Musikstilen und Instrumenten ebenso wie um die Suche nach dem „Nationalen“ in der Musik. Lieder als kulturhistorische Quellen, oder die komplexe Bildsprache in der Volkspoesie stellen einen weiteren Ansatz dar, ebenso wie Biographisches und neueste Forschungen zum Minderheitendiskurs in der Ethnomusikologie.

Dieses Buch erschien begleitend zu der 1994 von der Initiative Minderheiten zusammengestellten Ausstellung 'Am Anfang war der Kolaric', bei der Plakate gegen Fremdenfeindlichkeit und Rassismus in Österreich aus drei Jahrzehnten gezeigt wurden. Neben den Plakaten bietet der Band außerdem einen historischen Überblick über Migrationsbewegungen, politische und wirtschaftliche Hintergrundinformationen sowie Textsammlungen und didaktische Anregungen für die pädagogische Arbeit mit Kindern und Jugendlichen im Schulbereich.

A collection of essays which demonstrates the different disciplines, approaches and topics, presented at ISA Science ISA Science, the research format of University for Music and Performing Art Vienna’s summer school has turned out successfully both in terms of its international resonance and its effects on the institution’s academic community. Therefore the event’s program chairs have decided to publish a selection of what has been discussed and presented so far, demonstrating the considerable diversity of disciplines, approaches and topics.
